Valvoline Oil Related Question

I am getting ready to do my first oil change on my recently purchased '85 Targa and am trying to decide between Valvoline's 20W-50 and their VR1 20W-50 Racing oil. Can anybody tell me how these two oils differ ?

Thanks,

Ron

I'm a valvoline man myself. The racing oil is different, and that's what I use. I'm no engineer, but you can do the screwdriver test. Dip the business end of a screwdriver in it, and then try to hold it by pinching that tip between your fingers. Slotted screwdriver, you know. if you're old, you'll remember the commercials. Anyway, you'll see what I mean. It's different. Costs what, an extra couple of bucks per oil change?

The difference between a manufacturers racing oil and standard oil is generally a greater quantity of Zinc has been added to the racing blend. This helps protect the engine in the event of a major failure in the oil delivery system.

I've been using Valvoline racing 20W-50 oil in air-cooled engines from Germany for longer than most of the regulars/Gen-Xers here have been breathing air ... never a problem, and it even ran in my old Datsun 620 truck for more than 18 years without ANY major engine work for 150K+ miles ...

Of the three Valvoline blends, VR1 is the most expensive and also the newcomer, and the racing oil is only a few cents per qt bottle higher in cost over the regular grade ... so I will continue the support for the racing variety! Let the VR1 buyers support the lawyers and ad campaigns!
