sunroof cable

I have just replaced my sunroof cables. th eold ones would go back and fourth normaly. The new ones are sliping and dont move the top unless with a little hand help.

Any clues? Do I need to change anything else?

Tks

From what I've read; If you replaced the old cables w/ the new furry versions, they may be dragging more than the originals.

There is an adjustable tension clutch on the s/r motor which can be tightened; or you may want to de-fur the new ones.

Like island said, if you haven't already done so, you need to remove the fur on the cables.

Before I removed the fur on my new ones, I ran them back and forth in the tubes by hand, to help clean them out. Then removed the fur to keep from creating to much friction.

I just did this upgrade to my 84. I left the fur on the cables with no problems at all. I am not sure what you mean by slipping?

The fur will not generate that much more friction than the non fury ones. I also upgraded the shoes and the travel guides as well.

Slipping may be caused by a bad or worn clutch or a bad gear all on the motor.

Nolift, from your post it sounds as if you upgraded to 964 style guides as well. If I'm not mistaken, these have a larger I.D. than the pre-964 style? Which would allow the use of the cables with the fur intact.

Having done this job, I don't think there is any benefit to the later channels. Other than they are slightly larger to accomodate the fur cables.

One downside to the later channels is that they are black, from what I recall. On earlier cars, you'd have black channels on the side and chrome on the deflector and front pieces.

It only took me a few minutes to get the fur off (I did one of them while standing at the parts counter waiting for the cashier). Once you do that and slightly grind down the sliders, you essentially have the early cables.

I think some people have left the fur on, and still had it work. My view was that my original, 25 year old cables didn't have it, so I don't need it. Plus, from what I could see, the channels that run through the roof are pretty tight. I just wanted to make things as easy as possible for my sunroof motor and system.

Guys,

To be honest I went round and round about this...I thought I was getting a 964 upgrade. According to most, for the tracks, you need to cut to the proper length for the upgraded guides...mine you did not need to, = they were perfect length...but they also accepted the new 964 style shoes in the guides without modification also. New parts maybe?

Anyway keeping the felt on was a no brainer for the newer style guides, no real friction at all and if it was good enough for the 964 from the factory it seems to be good enough for me also.

Added benefits? Well it seems smoother and less noisy to me, but that may be due to the lightness in my wallet

Ron, the only benifit IMHO in upgading to 964 style guides, is not having to do the grinding on the pieces to make them fit.

Jeff, on mine the felt didn't make it so that the cables wouldn't go through, it just increased the resistance. I know some people have left it on, but I didn't want to put any more stress on the system than need be.

And like SoCal said, the felt came off in like 5 mintues on each cable.
