My car didn’t have any washer fluid tank when I bought it.
Everything was in place except that the fluid tank and headlight washer pump were ripped out leaving cut tubes hanging. I have sourced all the missing parts and finally got it all back together. Here’s the mystery. The headlight washer ONLY functions when the lights are completely off. As soon as I pull the headlight switch it doesn’t work. This is completely opposite to how it should work The wiring looks completely stock. there is a gray wire into the relay ”S” which is bridged to ”56” . The other end of the gray wire goes into the loom towards the dashboard. ![]() In the fuse box area there is a another gray wire from the top of fuse 2 going into the loom from the headlight washer relay going towards the dashboard. This wire is hot when any light is on. That is when the headlight switch pulled at least two step 1. ![]() So we have two gray wires in the loom going towards the dashboard. One that is hot when the lights are on and the other going back to the relay. The switch also has two gray wires going into it. One would presume that these are are the two wires from the loom. This is also how it looks on the circuit diagrams I have. Obviously something else is going on behind the dash. Are there any electrical gurus here that have any insights on what is going on? The car is a 1981 SC ROW. Thanks

This is getting more weird. If I pull the gray wire on top of fuse two, the wire which is ony live when the lightswitch is pulled to step 1 or or two, it doesn't work. This makes sense but if I reconnect it works if the lightswitch is off.
I don't get it. What is going on here?

Ok, solved it myself. The headlight washer relay is shot. There is continuity between pins 56 and 30 so the gray wire from the relay is always hot!!
Pressing the switch closes the circuit and grounds through the license plate lights... When the hedlights are on there is +12v on both wires going to the switch. Hence no current through the coil in the relay. Tricky one. New relay ordered.
