VIN plates across the years

I've been trying to find a good thread or website dealing with the VIN plaque changes (and cessation of use) for the air-cooled years for US cars. I'm referring to the full VIN plate, one type of which is seen in this pic:



I may be alone, but I have always been a little uncertain as to when these truly stopped being used in the US, and the specific changes across the years. I gather the following, which I will update as better information comes in:

through 71: a narrower type of plate was used
72 - 77: a wider plate was used
78 and newer: no plate was used in the US

Experts, please correct me if I am wrong, especially about the last year these were used on US cars. See this thread, in which there is a plate on an SC, but it looks like on a RoW car:
