Ontario to sieze street racers

Province passed a law allowing police to sieze high performance cars. Also banned nitrous. Haven't seen the legislation yet but it is a kneejerk reaction to ricers. Man I need a green card.

Yeah, because dentistry in The Great White North just got a whole lot more interesting. So are they going back to using whiskey or what?

Wow, is this real? Thats pretty scary to think about. Especially with the new Fast and the Furious coming out in the relatively near future..................I can only imagine what kind of things might be passed after that.

Freedom vs. a Government that promises everyone will be "safe"...guess we all must decide which we prefer, and to what degree. I'm in a bad mood today, so I'll withold comment on where I think things are headed...

What proof does the cop need to take the car? My Golf is lowered and has big wheels and low profile tires, so it might look like a street racer car to a cop, but I do all my racing on the track.

The reason why I'm asking is because I just saw a documentary on street racing in the Toronto area, and one cop was explaining his method of telling the racers apart from the average Joe on the road. He said, "I use the duck method: If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck".

So I put some well thought out and engineered mods on my humble four door hatchback for fun and I'm a target for harassment?

If that's the way it turns out, I want to go back to Denmark and just ride my bicycle everywhere.

I heard about that... we will soon be the amsterdam of the north. So soon there will be kids driving around high, which will be fine as long as your not in a civic with tinted windows.

Ummm.... So if I buy a brand new "high performance" Ferrari F40, will they be waiting for me to drive off the dealership to seize it?

Does this crap apply to Ottawa too? Where can I read the details?

Ummm, I think it would be best to know the full context of the *law* before we make judgements. I'd imagine this is in response to the increasing number of illegal street races, in which ricers seem to be the popular car, and the ones that run NOS.

Just a few nights ago, a couple of idiots drag racing their Rice a Roni specials killed one parent of a neighbor of ours. The other parent is in critical condition. IMHO, this is just cause for seizure of the vehicles.

I also believe the police in various So Cal cities have been able to impound/seize illegal street racers cars for a while.

Now, where did I put that pipe anyway

stripped

When I was In high school My brothers buddy got his 55 chevy impounded for adeing and abetting ( watching a street race). 25 hours later when they allowed him to retreve his car from the police lot it was stripped. Funny how that works. He was only missing his 454 with dual quads & 4 speed tranny the hood and the seats, and the polished weld wheels. Not bad for spending the weekend under police protection.

bb80SC is right. If you are caught in the act doing something dangerous (to others) you deserve to lose your car. Go to the drag strip and race your car into the ground there.

The Porsche boys can't use a water pipe can they?

Speedy -- was there any recourse for your brother's car?

PBH -- that was fantastic.

So....if I have this correct....I build a 2 door Chevy....with grey paint....no stripes....black wheels with hubcaps...black wall tires ...and one humungus engine...say 600-700 cu in....with looong mufflers to keep it quiet.
Sounds like a plan...no wait....did that already!

Agreed he's a ***** head but at the risk of sounding like Grampa here I'm all for a noise limit on street registered cars. There's a time and place for everything and I would prefer seeing and hearing performance (or just fast sounding ...you know who you are) cars at the track or drag strip, not my residental street or at a stop light outside InNOut Burger. In a public setting loud cars = loud music and that get's folks very cranky, very fast.

No worrries mate, the new law defines in small print the following: Asian imports are street racers. European imports are genteel motor cars American imports are simple transportation tools needed to avoid walking.

here's what I'd like to know, how do you rationalize the difference in penalty to someone who loses a $50,000 car versus a $500 car? Assuming the infraction was the same (racing, or whatever) this seems to me to be raising a problem that wouldn't fly in the US.

I mean, there is no additional penalty for speeding in a fast car or extra years in jail for robbing a jewelry store over a convenience store. See what I mean? It leads to disproportional punishment.

Right now if you drive your car over the US/Mexican border into the US with illegal drugs, and you get caught, kiss the car goodbye, it becomes property of the State. If the car happens to be a Dodge Colt with busted windows or a GT3 the result is the same.

I would rationalize the penalty difference as follows:
- 1st offense, hefty fine, licence points, and a final warning about the loss of vehicle rule
- 2nd offense, loss of licence w/mucho hefty fine and adios to the vehicle being raced

If the person was dumb enough to race the expensive car again then they proved to dumb to own it in the first place or too rich to care.

understood, but this country does not penalize or criminalize being stupid or rich. Society might, but the government itself has no such authority.
