If I give my VIN to the body shop will work show on car fax?

I am in the process of installing a new rear valance to fit a M&k GT3 exhaust. I stopped by a Porsche dealership on my way to a meeting and got a verbal quote of $225.00 to paint the valance. The body shop manager said he needed my VIN # to give a written quote. Will this show up on a Carfax report? Is this a reasonable price?

If they report it to Carfax it will. Ultimately the dealer/bodyshop/service center has to report it. Also if there is an insurance company involved (collision claims etc) they usually report it. Price is not cheap, nor expensive, I think pretty reasonable, but my opinion.

Find an independent shop and give them cash.

Kind of the point of the car fax isn't it? I would just try and ensure the details reported are correct. Two sides to every coin...think about it as a buyer..more details the better.

I tend to like my privacy......If they got a VIN from me, it wouldn't be all that accurate....

Let me make sure I understand this. You're just bringing the valance to them by itself, and they say they need a VIN number to give you a quote? Why??

A Porsche dealership is the last place I'd bring a part to be painted. Take it to a painter. Or paint it yourself. It's just a valance. Nobody will notice if it isn't perfect. You can get excellent color-match paint in high quality rattle cans these days.

The VIN is most likely to match the paint and isolate variants in the code.

Thanks for the help guys! I took a ride out to Fischer Motors and he recommended Belknap Auto body in Lake Barrington, IL. Place was loaded with Porsches. He will have it done in a couple days and even saved me about $50! Also no VIN required

Beacuse of sloppy work, my ride has two carfuch reports. They used an 0 instead of O.

Good. They shouldn't need the vin. A vin doesn't decode paint codes. The painter would use the paint code to review the possible variances. They use paint chips and spray out panels to make a match. They maybe wanted the vin to write an appraisal, but 100% not needed unless for insurance reports.

this is exactly the reason. we've had plenty of people tell us 'yeah I know the paint code' only to have it be completely wrong. getting the VIN from the owner guarantees we get the right paint code.

even if it is listed in the carfax its not going to be an entry for accident/damage

Not sure I agree with this. To my knowledge the 17 digits in a vin code does not include the color. The 3 appraisal systems I've used for over a decade now do not decode color. Let me know what digit does this. Just wondering. Thanks. I always grab the paint of the door jamb (on the vin sticker, but not the vin code) or other areas on some manufacturers.

Maybe your using a paint system that can pull down from the VIN? This is like sayin Audatex Audi VIN reads all the options from the VIN. This is not correct. The information is coming from the manufacturer. Having just the VIN and no systems give origin, year, make model..

I bought a car in the fall and the CarFax showed an estimate to fix the bumper.

The PO used that information to collect money from the person that backed into him and then used it to pay a guy cash to fix it.

They pull built sheet using VIN, and it tells the paint code.

For God Sakes, why is everyone freaking out giving VIN to the person who is going to work on the car, WHO will have a direct eye contact with it anyways. Relax

Everyone is worried it will show as an accident reported on the carfox. The new thing is suing for a DV claim over carfox. Cars get worked on.
