Hi

Help 915 Clutch
Hello Everyone,
![]() I've replaced the clutch on my 915. Now it's time to marry up the gearbox and engine. I've used the alignment tool for the clutch, I have the gearbox "almost" all the way on the 4 engine/trans mount studs but I can't get it to slide on the rest of the way. ![]() The throwout bearing fork is lined up with the bearing, so that's ok. Do any of you have ideas on how to push the gearbox the rest of the way? I've tried muscling it without success. I know the two just don't slide together that easily, but this time around seems to be more of a struggle. Thanks in advance. ![]() Larry

E/brake on and in gear stops the mainshaft from turning. Engine and trans both at the same angle. Turn the engine a small amount using a socket on the fan nut and repeat as needed until it goes in. They do fight you sometimes.

Relax the pressure between the two. Turn the flywheel with a screwdriver a couple cogs on the ring gear. The splines engaging are holding you apart the last half inch.

You can also try actuating the clutch very slightly to help the disc slip slightly into alignment if the problem is that it's not quite centered. Just be careful as depending how close together you have things you could be pushing the throwout too far. Memory is fuzzy but pretty sure that's how I got mine together.

Assuming you have the engine/gearbox out of the car, if you have the box in gear, you can grab both output flanges and turn them in the same direction - this will slightly move the input shaft splines.
Also, since I don't have a lift or an assistant, I personally find it easier if the flywheel side of the engine is SLIGHTLY higher than the mating surface of the transmission, so that I can lift the far side of the transmission and wiggle it up and down as well as side to side as I try to push the two together. I hope that helps. |

This may not be your problem but I experienced the same trouble. Turned out I had fitted the clutch lever back on to the splined shaft at the wrong angle.....as I pushed the box on, the lever hit the stop and in turn stopped the box sliding all the way home.
