Speedometer Removal

Gents,
My odometer and speedometer on my 1969-911E is not working at all. I have searched the forum for removal of the speedometer and I understand that they(early models-year not specified) are held in by two clamps and the later models (year not specified can carefully be pried out)... ...."On the very early cars, the gauges were held in using two small clamps behind the gauge. In order to remove the speedometer, you need to remove the two clamps and pull out the gauge. On cars equipped with cable-driven speedometers, you need to unscrew the cable from the back of the unit before you remove it from the dash.

I am trying to first pry out the clock so I can access the speedo, but here is my question...How early is early in terms of what year the author is talking about? Does the 69 year group fall in to that category??? or can it be pried out?

I bought some small plastic trim tools to help facilitate the removal...Once again thanks for the clarification in advance.

All the gauges have retainer brackets on a '69. gotta go at them through the front trunk. Probably need to remove the fresh air box to get at the clock unless your hands are tiny.

I was hoping that it applied to the very early cars 66-68! That's not what I wanted to hear! Thanks

What was the first year 911's were you were able to pull the gauges out without going through the trunk?

My 69 912 has the brackets holding the gauges, the fasteners for the brackets are merely knurled thumb screws---no tool other than your fingers required.

On my 73.5 the speedometer and clock are held in my a rubber gasket that surrounds them. Not certain of the 'first year'.

I am looking at my dashes through my trunk and it seems like I have alot of hardware that I have to remove just to get to them...am I off base is this the case for your 911 set up as well?

Thanks! That's what I am faced with, trying to figure how to remove the airbox without damaging anything else to gain access to the gauges!

Start with the 2 Phillips head screws on either side of the plate holding the mesh screen to the body in the middle of the car between the hood and the windshield. The rest of it isn't that difficult to figure out.

I suppose you could jack up one of the rear wheels and with the car in neutral have someone spin the wheel while you look at the cable? Or even simpler just drive a few feet with the cable hanging into the open hole where the speedometer fits and see if it is spinning?
