Half shaft ?'s

Hello!

I was looking at a half shaft from a 73 911 and I noticed the two studs were broken off one side. I looked at the other side and noticed the studs weren't studs, they were some sort of wound metal strips. Can I replace the broken ones with metal dowels of an equivalent size? Why are they coils and not studs to begin with?

Thanks!
BK

coils?

If you're talking about the wheel end of the half shaft ignore this. I haven't messed with that side at all.

On the engine side of my '73T's half shafts there are 4 allen bolts and 2 studs that fit into the differential. Can you get any pictures?

Are the bolts broken off or the studs?

The two studs on either side of the half shaft are not studs. If you look at it closely it's actually a would piece of metal. My bolts are fine, it's the two "studs" that broke off. I can get pics later.

Thanks!

Perhaps a roll pin? When putting mine back together the other night, I seem to recall thinking they were roll pins, but didn't pay much attention as they were unbroken.
Ever put a CV joint back together from scratch when you didn't disassemble it? Like a jigsaw puzzle without the picture

They're not "studs", they're "roll pins" used to help align the joint. They should come with a new joint and be available individually through our host. If you search the archives someone may have posted the size, then you could get them at a local parts house.
