Outer Door Handle Replacement
Ok I have 101 Projects and have read up on this as the driver side outer door opener finally gave way yesterday, but I have just one question.
How hard is it to put the original core in the new door handle? I know there is an article on it in 101 projects, but if any of you have done it, did it take long? I am not worried at all about pulling the interior of the door apart, and I want to make sure the window is still on the track completely since it rattles a little. I am just curious if any of you that hae "been there and done that" can give me any other advice... Thanks, Bill |
I have done this on the door handles of an 88 VW cabbie which is essentially the same thing. Swapping the lock cores is easy...take your time and go slow...should not have any problems.

I also had the unfortunate task of replacing the driver-side door handle on my "84". Unfortunate, only in that after calling the local dealer I found that the cost of replacement was approx $375. Handle only! After finding a suitable alternative, I tore the door apart. I found the fitting of the "core" to be very straight forward. My suggestion is to replace the core with a new lock, due to your key operating the new handle with a possible worn-out core. I used the old core and found that I needed to file it a little to have it work smoothly. By replacing the door handle I found it less embarassing than having to climb in through the passenger side door to open the drivers door, and making it look like all Porsche owners did the same thing. It's fairly simple. Just don't over tighten the core screw.
It will make the key hard to turn. From memory. Depending on the year. You may need to shorten the pin/rod that operates the latch. As for the rattles. Most probably a weatherstrip issue. My first thought would be the fussy one at the top of the window on the outside. |
i put a new lock barrel assembly on my '86.
it was a doddle, only fiddly bit was getting in to the small nuts holding the handle on the door. patience........ take time strip it all and give a good clean. i just used wd40 and then a little grease on reassembly. good luck. |

Thanks guys. I was goign to wait on ordering the part till after teh holidays, but like you said Mike, its kind of tough to reach over the seat all the time.
I appreciate the comments and will post any solutions I have for the window rattle. As mine is a convertible, I don't know if it woudl be the top weatherstripping and that looks like it is secured pretty well. Bill |

I've got two used handles I picked up off ebay when my driver's side trigger piece broke. You're welcome to one. They are black but look like originally chrome. I have raided both for the triggers (my passenger side trigger broke a month ago), but the other parts are there. The guts were slightly different than my 85 but if you intend to reuse yours I think it will work. Let me know. New handles are outrageou$. |

Thanks for the offer, but from what I can tell, the 86 has the whole triggel piece as one unit and the trigger is what busted in mine, I ordered one (yeah I know, there are alot more things I would rather spend my money on..) so I will see if there is a way to swap parts with my broken one when I get it apart and let you know. Bill, sorry for the poor explanation on the rattle.
I meant on the top of the door, not the glass. Roll the window down all the way. Look at the outer side, inside. Down about 1/2 inch is a felt fuzzy strip. It is held in with snaps. They just rot after time. Tried to get the pop up off Pelican's catalog. Couldn't figure it out.
