Porsche custom color Paint Repair Questions - HELP PLEASE!

Hi, someone "keyed" my 1987 911 coupe, "Cassis Red" color - which I know is a rare, unusual color.

I have never had to go through this with any car. let alone my 911... I need a lot of help.

Key mark is on panel behind drivers side door, it is about 6 inches, not in a straight line, and when i run my finger nail it snags so it is deep.

Does Porsche Germany keep any custom color paint stocks for all models / years?
Is it just a case of a reputable shop / paint expert mixing a color as close as he can get?
My Insurance here in British Columbia, Canada is provided by the Government - say no more!

If it was your car what would you insist on to make sure it is done right?. I don't want it to look close. I want it to look as good as it did before.

Anyone with a custom or difficult color to match had a good or bad experience they can share and give me advice?

i have spoken to a local, recommended shop, but without seeing the car, they have already said "000000h a custom color, that will be hard to do"..... I had not expected someone to be telling me that at the outset.

The Cassis Red color does change in appearance depending on the light / sun etc, so I presume that might make it more challenging to match?

Thank you for any information, experience and advice you can provide..

If it's down to metal a shop will need to repair the scratch. They will need to do there best to color match and then do a blend into the panel. Is your car single or 2 stage? 2 stage will be easier to blend and hide the new paint. A good shop can hide the work.

Cassis Red is not a custom color.. its a factory optional color as all metallic were. Its two stage, base/clear coat. Beautiful color by the way!

The panel will have to be feathered back and refinished/blended. A competent shop should have no problem blending. Try to use a shop that is capable of mixing their own paint.. this way they can mix the formula and use spray cars to check the match and adjust.

Great color. And not hard to get for a good body shop. It will be a bit of work but they can fix it. Get more bids. Ring up a few Porsche shops and ask who they use. Scan Auto and Turn3 come to mind. They are local with lots of history and experience.

keyed Porsche

Hi this is when you find out a good painter to a not so good, and ill tell you why
nearly always the bad painter will try and talk you in to having the whole side
painted because deep down he knows he will have trouble doing a perfect match
so be aware of that, a real pro will be able to match with one panel only.

I'm not sure I agree. Blending (what you are referring to above) is the correct method. Especially if the damage is adjacent to the next panel. Red is a tough color regardless of manufacturer. A real pro will be able to fix a problem and not have it noticeable.

I agree with the comment about having a shop that mixes their own paints do the work. You just can't go to a auto paint supplier and order this color and expect it to match. It is a red color (obviously) and red, along with yellow, have a tendency to effected by UV rays. To test this - remove any badge or script. The color below will be lighter than the surrounding color - if it has been UV damaged. Very common occurrence.

If it is UV damaged - the body shop will match the paint tint that is one the car now, rather than just having the stock color mixed.

good luck and sorry to hear about the vandalism.

Thanks Matt. I had my engine work done by Jeff at Turn3 and he has recommended Integra Custom Collision, and I have been in touch already.
I will also call Scan in North Van - thanks for your input
