Unhappy Momo steering wheel removal

1985 911 Targa with a Momo "TYP D36" wheel. I pulled the 27mm steering wheel nut, but cannot pull the adapter off the shaft. Is there some magic German word I have to utter to get this off? Perhaps Italian (Momo is Italian)?

Any help would be appreciated. And after I get the adapter off is there a trick to pulling the column flashing behind? I am trying to get to the stalk wiper switch in the (now dimming) hope of getting my intermittent wipers to work and the wipers to stop automatically.

Again, Thanks!

Brian

are you putting the wheel back on the adapter after pulling the nut? You can use the wheel for leverage and gently rock it a bit while pulling to get it off the spline.

I haven't pulled the stalk switches, but according to 101 projects it is straightforward. Book good.

After I've tightened the nut, I usually have to use a puller to get the hub adapter to come off.
If you're in the Seattle area, you're welcome to borrow mine if you don't have one.

I have had to use a puller everytime, when removing my Momo wheel. You can pick up a cheap puller set from Harbor frieght for $10.

Do you usually need a puller to get the stock wheel off an 87? Mine needs to be ratated one spline to the right.

Okay... to remove the adapter this should work.

I would just place a rachet extension through the adapter and use that to slowly bang it towards you. Of course a pentrating lubricant would help things too.

If you dont have a long adapter you can use anything else that would fit. Sometimes a tap in the opposite direction will loosen things too.

The attached picture shows the adapter and the openings along the side of the adapter where you can slide through a piece of metal tubing or the rachet adapter. I removed mine that way.

Got it off - thanks!

Gear puller worked slick. Thanks for the idea! Now - ON TO WIPER SWITCH!

Brian,
The wiper switch is easy - just take a good look at Bentley first.
Getting the clamshell switch cover aligned and the retaining screws back in was a test of character for me. Hoping YMMV!

Smile Thanks everybody!

Thanks for the help. Don, I am across the sound in Poulsbo, thanks for the offer. I have a puller and was able to get it off.

Bent the contacts so the opened and closed appropriately, and now they work great - both intermittent and shutoff.

Thanks again, I think I will get that book...

Brian
