I forgot how the 917 in its rookie season so thoroughly dominated the 69 LeMans! Until the breakdown of course .... -- Curt

Dang, I just got home and saw this thread.

What was the title of the show so I can be on the lookout for it when it re-airs?

It was one of the 'Legends of Motorsports' series. Don't know the segment title but it was on the 69 LeMans. The GT40 won by only 100 yards of so from the Porsche 908! The 917 was 14 laps in the lead when its clutch or something went south. Go to www.speedtv.com and see if it will be replayed. -- Curt

The "Legends of Motorsports" - La Ronde Infernale will be rebroadcast this morning at 10:00 AM Eastern and then 6:30 PM Eastern time this evening.

Better set the VCR!

For some reason, I cannot seem to understand the schedule on SPEED channel. Can anyone just tell me when it will be on in my area (Seattle...Pacific Time)?

Hi. Do you have DIRECTV or DISH? If so, then more then likely you are receiving the east coast feed which means the schedule will not match your times... I recommend TIVO... then you can have it record all things "Porsche" and you won't miss another show again...

TIVO is the best...

I'd recommend TIVO to anyone that hates to miss anything on TV that is Porsche related...

I caught the rerun this evening. I was surprised to hear that the GT40's could out brake the Porsches.

Taped it, OH YEA,

It always impresses me when I see 917's in real film footage....I once saw a 917-023 lookalike (or the real one) at Moroso in WPB and that bad boy absolutely shook the earth...the sound was incredible, but.... its was nothing like seeing one of the greats throw one around a track in rare footage.....I must have wood or something...

Anyway, well worth the tape!!!

Jim R. , that surprised me too. I thought that the GT 40 was a heavier
car than the 908 (Piech being so obsessed with weight) and that the
advantage under braking would be in the 908's favor. Obviously not.

It's interesting that if it wasn't for the chicane the 908 would have won -
it just reinforces my dislike for chicanes. Wasn't there a thread the other
night about irony? It's ironic that they have a chicane named after Jimmy
Clark, who hated them.

I swear, I don't normally post "fan" email, but the 917 coverage was staggering. Seeing the cars at speed and handling corners was just amazing. We read about these things, and see them at car shows/etc, but live (!) man (!). I only caught half of the coverage but it was quite wonderful.

krk.

As for the braking.... I remember an autoweek( of the large format) from the early 80's that recovered that race and (as I've read elsewhere) the 908 of Hans Herman was plagued by an idiot light for the brakes for the last few hours of the race. That is why he was passed by the GT-40 in the corners. I have seen print to that effect several times, and also notations that the light was false and he ended up being ginger when he need not be so.

But it was indeed a great race, I was two then( or almost two) so i don't remember much..... but the film is sure great and we learn a bit about the 917 and its realy year!
