What to do with Turbo race car
 

Advice please. I am a mechanical neophyte with a 1991 911 turbo race car that has been in storage for 7 years. The car was in an accident ten years ago and restored for the race track. I ran it on track for two years and had rod failure so we put a high HP 3.3 race prepped engine in it but never were able to get the fuel air mix right on boost due to my unwillingness to spend $$s. Tried original WUR and a customized electronic regulator but couldn't manage it. The engine made over 400 hp on the dino.

It seems like these cars are in strong demand generally but..i don't know about one that is exclusively a track car.

What to do? Sell the car in parts. Engine, body, wheels, etc. Or do I spend a lot of money and then try to sell it as a functioning race car and hopefully get money back plus.

Nice car, don't have any advice but it's beautiful.

Getting the air/fuel, boost enrichment mixture correct is not overly difficult if you have the patience to learn how to adjust it, the willingness to buy some tools to do so, an onboard AFR meter, and a mechanical, adjustable WUR. But it is a lot of work that can be both daunting and frustrating when just learning about it, and not cheap when starting from scratch. And would be very expensive to pay someone else to do the tuning.

Being that you say you are a "mechanical neophyte", maybe the easiest thing to do first would be to try and sell it "as is", being honest about how it needs fuel tuning work, and see if someone is willing to pay you what you want for it.

Do you have a title for it?

Can you turn it back to stock? Brings more dough if that is your ultimately goal.

Since you have owned it for >7 years, you probably bought it for a song compared to where they are today. Why not cash in on that, and buy yourself an easier project, or a turn key car? Not sure how the no title thing plays out, but is also a great candidate for a hot rod, or even a Singer? Also should say - she is still very pretty as is.

I'd run it through eBay with a reserve high enough I'd feel good if it sold. Seems like for guys who would be interested in a racecar, the fuel air issue wouldn't be a big deal. eBay is pretty cheap for the exposure you get and you always seem to end up with a bunch of inquiries after the sale if it doesn't make reserve. That being said, my advice is DON'T SELL IT! Makes me crazy thinking about the air cooled cars I've sold, all seemed like a good idea at the time but no way I could afford to buy them back.

If you've got no title sell it as is. It's now a racecar. Not an easy way to bring it back.

You can recover titles for little money.

Finishing it correctly with $$$ parts won't make you money. You're lucky it you get 50 cents to the dollar once you sell a race-prepped car.

As others said either spend the effort to turn it back to stock or sell it as parts or project. Turning it to stock can be lots of work depending on how much was done to it. For high-$ return you want matching numbers engine/transmission/VIN and this can be tough if not impossible given the original engine grenaded.

Selling it as parts/project with the trailer to the right buyer is probably is the quickest way to extract maximum $ with the least effort. Think about it: parting out takes more but brings more $, this is how many make money these days. Either way it sure has appreciated over the last 10 years no matter what.

Only thing about parting it out that would pay is selling the 3.3 turbo engine and turn selling the roller. Any more labor than that and you are paying yourself $5/hr.

It depends on where you live. If you have no smog test, learn how to fix it or pay someone, put plates on it and enjoy it.

I've got $5 that a title search will reveal a total loss and force a salvage or rebuilt title from the crash. That is why it was made a racecar. I can almost guarantee it.

Sounds to me like you should sell it as is. It's been sitting for 7 years and it doesn't sound like you want to dump more time and money into it, someone else will. Try ebay or Bring a Trailer with an acceptable reserve.

Congrats on the sell. Hope it went off to a good home. I definitely would have enjoyed running it on the track. :)
