Torsion Tube & Replacement

Picked up an '82SC that was curbed - hard - in its previous life at the right rear side. Folded right rear tire under car Good news is no panel replacement was nec. BUT the torsion tube was repaired (badly) and the "squareness" was not properly executed. I am needing to R&R the torsion tube. ALL the shops here in KC are not willing to take it on Seems as if most body shops don't want to work on cars past 5 years old. Must be the insurance $. Any shops in the mid-west anyone could recommend? Also need a correct torsion tube, any idea where to source? Thanks.....

Tubes are getting harder and harder to find and it should be possible to take out the tube, cut off the damaged tube, butt weld in a repair section and then add a reinforcing sleeve - we have repaired 2 tubes using this method and they have worked out well.

Volume ll of the early Workshop Manual has a complete description of how to replace and tube and is worth a look.

There are a number of threads that address torsion tube replacement. Most seem to be older cars from rust. There's a thread from a few years ago where some guy in Maine swapped a rusted tube for a good one in his barn. Nice piece of work. Sourcing one may be a bit of a challenge, expensive or both.

For the repair, you may have more success with a race shop than a body shop, someone already doing heavy fabrication. You could even check with some of the pros on the board - chuck moreland, steve weiner, etc. to see if they can recommend someone close to you. Or if you have any local contacts in the race community, doesn't need to be a Porsche shop. My $.02.
