Selling the car advice
Hi everyone,
I'm in the process of selling the SC, but I'm running into a couple of situations: 1. The motor was rebuilt around 6K miles ago by someone that, to my surprise, is evidently well known on the Porsche racing circuit. I know the guy builds race engines, but I didn't realize he was "legend." Some folks have never heard of him, but those that have evidently know his handi-work. I've had three folks offer to buy the engine, but not the entire car!! 2. I've had a couple of folks offer to by only my wheels!! They're the wider Fuchs, and they are simply flawless. I didn't realize these wheels were so hard to get! 3. I continue to get what I consider ridiculous offers, as low as $6K. Granted the car has a rusted front half-pan and 420,000KM's, but everything mechanical has been replaced with new factory parts, and the car is in good enough aesthetic condition that it could be driven for years as is. Mechanically it's as bullet-proof as you'll find! What's irritating me is that I've been offered as much as $5.5K for the engine, $1K for the wheels, and $1K for the transmission. I don't understand why the car won't sell for $10K??? You'd think a non-sunroof car would be popular with the track crowd, but I guess it's not a good time to be selling a Porsche eh? I listed the car on Rennlist, and nowhere else. Any advice?

Don't try and sell in SoCal.
![]() How much???!!! There's an '87 with similar mileage that may only be worth $10k... so ... 911 prices seem to be falling quickly. I was considering selling mine in the spring and trading up... but now I'm not too sure. I guess the best advice is to come up with a realistic price and stick with it. If you're not in a rush to sell then you may eventually find a buyer. But $10k sounds high for your car.

I would strongly recommend that you create a good website with lots of pics. Then list on the PCA site (need to be a PCA member), and Pelican. I sold my 97 targa a couple months ago and had most all calls come from the PCA website and magazine ad.
It's very easy to get discouraged especially with all the bargain shoppers out there. You may want to consider going to more local porsche club events too. The best thing to do is ignore all the shoppers who can "find these car everywhere else for less money"...my question is, why are they calling if they can find them for less?!?! It took me several months to sell my 97. I finally got my price but had to wait for that one person who was willing to pay a 'fair amount', which was waaaay above the low 30's price everyone seems to be seeing lately. --Dan |

Michael,
$1k for the wheels is low, as is the gearbox as well. Would ask $1500 for either and go down a bit if needed. Believe that you could do better by going on Ebay than parting it out. Just saw a rust bucket older car selling for $3800 or so on Ebay and it was nothing special. The suggestions above are also good but at times you can find someone on Ebay with more cash than common sense and get a good price. Joe

Here's one for you Micheal -
Of course, you could part yours out - but that would be the hard way to $10K When my car was hit, I was calling around for used wheels - Ricks European Connection (727) 546-5347 told me they would be interested in my car -as scrap. You may call and ask them what they would give you for yours, minus wheels, transmission and engine. Just a thought, I am probably not helping... ![]() |
