The best in the business
Amidst the crooks that are frequently exposed here, there are companies that make it a pleasure to own a Porsche.
Recently, I had my first dealings with two of the best in the business..... As part of my 3.0 top-end rebuilding project, I sent the rocker arms and shafts to Walt Watson at Competition Engineering for inspection and restoration as needed. This is one outfit that lives up to it's reputation. Fantastic work at very reasonable prices. The items came back on time, packed with obvious care. Refreshingly, Walt inspects things very carefully, and does not sell you what you don't need. And unlike at some specialist shops, Walt is a friendly person and answers all your questions, phone calls and e-mails. Like any good shop, they are *very* busy, so plan your schedule accordingly. My other pleasant experience came with EBS (Engine Builders Supply). Head man there is Jon Freismidl, again, a very easy person to deal with. I had EBS ultrasonically clean and pressure test the engine oil cooler. They kept me in touch (by e-mail) with the progress of the job, and shipped it back exactly when promised. The oil cooler looks absolutely like new! It was packaged in a thick plastic bag, with all the ports nicely plugged for cleanliness. At $60 (US), I thought this was a huge bargain. They also included a (free) catalog of all the other services they provide. First class all the way! In a few more days I'll be starting to put the 'Bomber's lump back together. Thanks to outfits like CE and EBS, this has been more pleasure than pain.

I've only talked briefly with Walt (at CE) on the phone and found him to be thorough, patient and knowledgable. I'd like to add two more 'best in the business' to your list Doug...Matt Blast at Eurometrix and Harvey Weidman of Weidman's Wheels. Matt transformed my tired, old and incorrect MFI setup to good as new condition. I sent him my throttle bodies, all the while feeling certain they were not the right ones for my '70 2.2E motor and sure enough he emailed me telling me the left side was from a '72S and the right side was off a '73S! He told me had some '70E throttle bodies around and traded mine for his and a little $$$. He's a super nice guy and very down to earth. I don't remember exact turn around time but with the way my project is going it didn't matter so much! Next Harvey Weidman set me up with some beautifully refinished early Fuchs. Harvey has a wealth of knowledge and I enjoyed my dealings with him greatly. Thanks Doug for starting this thread, these good folks should be recognized! Pete

I agree with CE and EBS, done biz with both of them over the years.
Its funny how in other threads involving certain engine builders, people will say "Every business has problems and dissatisfied customers." Yet, in my years in Porsche circles, and in my almost 7 years of talking Porsche on the internet, I've never seen anything bad said about CE, EBS, and other good businesses. |
