Spanner for fan?

Hi all. Coming up to my valve adjustment. I've heard 10k miles and I've heard "don't bother until the valves are clicking" I'm open to to opinions on that but! I don't have the half moon spanner to turn the fan. Anyone know of reasonably priced alternatives?

Cheers.

Just use a wrench on the nut holding the alternator pulley on. Will need to push on the belt with one hand if it's slipping, but that's doable. Problem will be when you want to change the belt eventually.... You'll need something to hold that pulley unless you have an impact wrench that can zing it off quickly.

As mentioned above, "... push on the belt..."

Just grab the belt on both sides and squeeze it together. That will keep the belt from slipping so you can loosen it. If you don't have the correct wrench for the nut you can use a 1" standard wrench or socket.

I'm thinking that most of us turn the engine using the alternator nut when checking valves. The wrench you're referring to is, IMO, used to counter-hold the pulley to keep it from rotating when you're removing the nut on the end of the alt. shaft, not really turn it per se.... You'd probably need to put a bit of pressure on the belt to turn the crank no matter which method you use.

Turn the alt pulley using a socket and ratchet while you push in on the right side of the belt. Leave the spark plugs in until you finish the valve adjust to keep carbon bits from falling onto a valve seat and causing an inaccurate adjustment.

The valves get tighter not looser as you drive the car. Eventually if tight enough you will lose compression because the valve will not close all the way

I presume you checked your car's tool kit and it's missing.

as others have inferred, you need this tool to install the alternator fan belt. If the belt breaks and you don't have this tool (and a spare fan belt), you'll be stranded (since the fan provides necessary cooling for the engine and your 911 shouldn't be run without the fan)

Correct. Not for timing, but to adjust valves.

Piston doesn't have to be at TDC. That's just one method. However, a valve is completely closed (to adjust clearance) when the rocker arm contacts the base circle/heel of each cam lobe. And since the camshafts rotate at 1/2 the speed of the crankshaft, the crank rotates further than shown while a particular valve is closed.

Just bump the engine with the starter until the rocker arm contacts the base circle area, then adjust. But then I've digressed a bit from the main thread topic.
