Anybody have first hand expierence with a 3.0 to 3.3 SS?

I read allot about the 3.2SS but not many that do the 3.3SS. Just wondering about thoughts on this set up? HP #s? Are the 40MM PMO to small for this engine? I have it in my car and it felt amazing in full "fake Turbo" garb for the day I drove it. Stripped the car to bare bones and sent it out next day for some dieting and paint work. ITS ABOUT TO COME HOME!

From the build sheet

Specs
EBS built 3.0-3.3SS
JE 100MMx9.8:1 Goetxe rings/70.4 stroke
LN cylinder set 100/103MM 3.5 slip in
Billet cam shaft set Mod S grind
40MM PMO
Georges European Headers (I think 1 and 5/8s) m/K 2 in 2 out
930 oil pump

Under 4K on new engine, car should be under 2300 lbs. once done stripping. FGlass getty hood, bumpers, duck, rothsport Fglass taillight buckets . Deleted sunroof, lightweight carpet, door panels,Fglass corbeau seats, blah blah blah
.
Everything stripped. Just trying to judge what I can expect. Thanks.

No experience, but it seems like you could do better with PMO 46's vs. the 40's.

That's what I was thinking and let me say it did feel DAMN fast as it was being heavy and just as is. Sure I could dump my 40MM if needed.

Yea... Fred Cook did that. He has an awesome build thread if you search for it.

The sound, she does take a while to warm up.

The beast awakens, that sound is raw and spiritual. Mine takes seven slow pedal pumps when starting after a few days, then feather until smooth. Otherwise cold it gets five but sometimes five will require a second try.

3.3ss

About 2 yrs ago I built a 3.3SS for my SC. I used a set of 100mm Mahle 10.5:1 pistons, LN Engineering slip fit cylinders, 964 cams, Carrera twin plug heads and Electromotive XDi ignition. Exhaust is SSI with a two in, one out muffler. The intake chores are handled by a much modified CIS large port airbox and runners matched to the cylinder head ports. I am very happy with this engine, has lots of torque and rev's easily up to where I have the ignition interrupter set at 7500 rpms. I also lightened the car by removing about 350-400 lbs of interior bits, replaced rear bumper with fiberglass and fitted lightweight seats. I have not had it on a dyno but the seat of the pants dyno tells me that it is making a significant amount of horsepower! Hope you enjoy your car as much as I have mine!

Thanks Fred, I have read all your threads regarding the engine! I think ours are a bit different but close enough. I should have mine back in a month or so. Its been gone since December. Like I said, I drove it for a day or 2 and then began stripping it. Having had a few air cooled 911s, I must say this one felt very peppy and it was carrying allot of unnecessary weight around at the time. I am going to have it dyno tuned and weighed to see exactly what I'm dealing with. I would be very happy with 250HP and under 2300 lbs. My first SC track car was 214HP at the crank and 2314 lbs and that car was amazing. I'm mimicking that car with the exact same parts on this car but this time we deleted the sunroof, so hoping that extra savings drops me below 2300, we shall see.I called Don@EBS who sold/built the motor back in 2011 but only 4K miles ago. He told me in the 260-280HP range on this engine. Seems a bit high to me, but what do I know. Not to much reference floating around for a 3.3 SS.

I think its gotta have 46mm PMO, not 40mm? 46 is the typical PMO recommendation

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1459952641.jpg

My buddy cstreit on the forum had a very similar engine in his 1970 911S widebody racecar.

base engine was a 3.0SC with "large port" heads
stock 70.4 stroke crank
SC rods balanced w/in 0.5g & ARP rod bolts
100mm JE pistons + LN Nickies
10.5 static compression w/Electromotive HPX twin ignition
Web 120/104 carbs
G2 performance low friction rocker refurb
Weber 46 carbs
custom long tube exhaust w/reverse cone collectors & merged "stinger" center outlet

Made 248 wheel HP on 93 octane pump gas. Car was 2200 lbs with driver and with the close ratio transmission it was a mean little car https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le3JZpAmkcw

So assuming the typical 15% driveline loss, 280 crank hp is completely reasonable.

Those cams make the engine sound wicked in my opinion at low rpms. I had a modified S cam in my own engine. Sounds pretty rorty at low rpms and really rips at high rpm

When I get it back I will enjoy it for a bit and start looking into selling my 40s and stepping up to the 46s. Are there any markings anywhere on the PMOS that show the size?

snbush67 04-06-2016 10:05 AM

There are a few sets in the classified section, maybe you could break even.

Still being transformed. Should be done in another month then we can dyno it.

I have this high compression 3.2SS in my 73.5. Previous owner that had it buillt had dyno sheet of 209 RWHP. CIS, but works very well with the early exhaust: (From the ad when I bought the engine on Pelican)

Quote:

Recently removed upgraded '81 SC engine and transmission from my '81 SC after car was damaged in front, causing parting out the car. Upgrades include 1) Max Moritz 3.2 liter pistons and cylinders, 2) 964 cams, 3) Raceware hardware, balanced rods, Carrera oil pump. New parts included: intake valve sleeves, rod bearings and rods balanced, and rocker arms. Transmission clutch disk, pilot bearing and fork were replaced.

Farrell 07-11-2016 11:42 AM

should you be able to make significantly more power if you use 46mm carbs?

curious if 250-260whp is obtainable in a 3.2ss or 3.3ss.

KTL 07-11-2016 12:16 PM

The 3.3SS I mentioned made 248 wheel horsepower. It was built for longevity, not high strung. Ran the engine in that configuration for about 5 years and it consistently produced that power. So it should be easily attainable and wasn't necessarily a race-only engine.

Farrell 07-11-2016 12:30 PM

great information again Kevin. exactly what i was looking for. thanks for that answer.

wayner 07-11-2016 12:40 PM

I have 46 mm on my 3.0 and it loves them!

Even some of the smaller 2.x race engines ran 46mm

As for power, the factory 2.8RSR made 300hp and they ran 24hr long races, so it was at least a "medium fuse" engine. With 500cc more than even a milder 2.8, think of it this way, a feeble 500cc single cylinder or twin four stroke motorcycle makes between 30-50hp. You are adding the equivalent of a small motorcycle into the mix.

Saw the ad, Asking strong money for an engine with no build sheet or documentation on who actually did the work. IMHO
