I am looking to find out from the community, on what the ideal ( realistic ) travel toolbag looks like
ie. what tools, parts etc should you have on hand at all times - in case of any emergency or quick repair that might be made on the side of the road? Would love to hear what everyone thinks should be tossed into a bag and brought on the road at all times. |

Definitely a DME relay and a fan belt. We also have other tools/accessories here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/Porsche/catalog/accessories.htm

I do all my work including pulling an engine just with the tools that fit in my trunk and can take to the track.

the "headlamp" is the gem in this thread , they never break down during the day and even if in a lit area very difficult to see in engine bay at night to change a belt. Never mind hold your wrench and pulley holder and flashlight.

My carry on tool kits:
1) My socket set is an approximately 6x6 x2" hard cased set that I bought at lows fully stocked. 2) My "wheel" tool bag is my wife's old yoga matt bag. It holds my spray foam and torque wrench etc. 3) My tool kit is a generic tool roll from a hardware store. I've stocked it myself. Not this one but very similar MAXIMUM 32-Pocket Roll Punch | Canadian Tire

Many factory tool kits come with a 22mm wrench for the fan/alternator nut when it's actually a 24mm nut, make sure you've got the right sized wrench. Not a bad idea to carry a small knife or cutters to cut the AC belt rather than mess with moving the compressor to change the fan belt. Unless it's summer and you've got to have AC, I wouldn't mess with the AC belt/compressor just to get to the fan belt.
Also, if you've never changed a fan belt (pretty easy actually), practice once in your garage so you're not trying to figure out shims, etc on the side of the road.

Test light, 3/8s socket set- 10 to 19mm, 1/4 socket set up to 13mm, electrical tape, a good compact LED flashlight and the correct complete factory tool kit.

Next time you change your belt, try doing it with just the tools in the bag to see if you can do it with what's on hand. I couldn't, as the fan nut is too tight to use with just the supplied tool. You need more leverage. I carry an 18" long piece of 3/4" copper tubing in the trunk to slip over the handle of the fan wrench. Acts as a cheater bar to give more leverage.
Should also pack something like plastic to lay on the ground in case you need to get under the car to look around. And take the Bentley manual... it won't do any good at home.
