Question The Ideal Tool Bag - For Repairs on the Road - What goes in!?

I am looking to find out from the community, on what the ideal ( realistic ) travel toolbag looks like

ie. what tools, parts etc should you have on hand at all times - in case of any emergency or quick repair that might be made on the side of the road?

Would love to hear what everyone thinks should be tossed into a bag and brought on the road at all times.

Just my thoughts FWIW
  • Fire extinguisher
  • DME Relay
  • 22mm socket (for fan pulley)
  • Extra fan shims
  • Alternator belt (make sure correct size! Continental one is apparently wrong, get genuine Porsche belt)
  • Tire plug kit
  • Fix a flat
  • Air compressor
  • Spark plug(s)

Definitely a DME relay and a fan belt. We also have other tools/accessories here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/Porsche/catalog/accessories.htm

I do all my work including pulling an engine just with the tools that fit in my trunk and can take to the track.

From this thread on the topic of air compressors and garage tools:
Home Garage Air Compressor

1) A long skinny bag that serves as my spare tire since I don't carry a spare (tire gunk, plugs, torque wrench and breaker bar with wheel bolts sized socket, and lithium powered impact driver)

2) A tool roll. Everything from wrenches to simple voltage tester, as well as lock wire, a magnetic cup for bolts during a repair, a rag, reading glasses and a jack pad)

3) A scissor jack and some odds and ends. Bag is just big enough for the scissor jack basically

Then I have the following hard items:

1) A plastic container that my socket set came with
2) my small compressor that is essentially a small air tank with a 110v diaphragm style compressor on it. Home depot etc sell lots of different varieties that trades use for nailing, or home users use for bike tires.

I think my compressor is the 2 gallon one - Google "2 gallon air compressor" - lots out there - try an image search.
My impact driver is a small 20v Dewalt 1/2 inch drive

If I come across a job that I can't do with my tool roll, I add it to the list and get one, and add it to the roll.

Packing:
-Spare oil and socket set goes in my smugglers box
-Tool roll goes into my 2nd battery box. ( I have a 73 with two battery boxes, but only run one battery leaving the extra one for storage)
-compressor and tire wrench bag strap in the the front of my trunk with the jack

Thats becoming the extent of my garage tools as I purge my space of all the big bulky tools and cabinets that I used to think that I needed.
For some jobs I have to job it out though, like wheel bearings that I never expect to have to do again any time soon.

P.S.
I don't include duct tape in my tools because I used a roll on the floor between the seats as my cup holder. Its always there if I need it.

the "headlamp" is the gem in this thread , they never break down during the day and even if in a lit area very difficult to see in engine bay at night to change a belt. Never mind hold your wrench and pulley holder and flashlight.

My carry on tool kits:

1) My socket set is an approximately 6x6 x2" hard cased set that I bought at lows fully stocked.

2) My "wheel" tool bag is my wife's old yoga matt bag. It holds my spray foam and torque wrench etc.

3) My tool kit is a generic tool roll from a hardware store. I've stocked it myself.

Not this one but very similar

Many factory tool kits come with a 22mm wrench for the fan/alternator nut when it's actually a 24mm nut, make sure you've got the right sized wrench. Not a bad idea to carry a small knife or cutters to cut the AC belt rather than mess with moving the compressor to change the fan belt. Unless it's summer and you've got to have AC, I wouldn't mess with the AC belt/compressor just to get to the fan belt.

Also, if you've never changed a fan belt (pretty easy actually), practice once in your garage so you're not trying to figure out shims, etc on the side of the road.

Craftsman have some nice small gate mouth bags that hold plenty of stuff.

And it's red, so it matchs my car!

How about :
Wireless and zip ties
Starting fluid
Small piece of 1x for soft ground
Plastic bag to lay on
Work gloves
Spare bulbs
Warning triangle
Cheap led triangle from HF

Your "tool" link goes to a $205.25 duffle bag that most DIY would not pay $5.00 for it But might "suit" the W.C. crowd

The DME relay (if applicable) and fan belt are a good suggestion

Test light, 3/8s socket set- 10 to 19mm, 1/4 socket set up to 13mm, electrical tape, a good compact LED flashlight and the correct complete factory tool kit.

Next time you change your belt, try doing it with just the tools in the bag to see if you can do it with what's on hand. I couldn't, as the fan nut is too tight to use with just the supplied tool. You need more leverage. I carry an 18" long piece of 3/4" copper tubing in the trunk to slip over the handle of the fan wrench. Acts as a cheater bar to give more leverage.
Should also pack something like plastic to lay on the ground in case you need to get under the car to look around.
And take the Bentley manual... it won't do any good at home.
