external thermostat operation
I've removed the caps on both sides but am a little confused on its operation. It appears that the supply side is always open and the themostat controls the return side. I thought part of the reason for having the thermostat in place was to keep cold oil from blowing out the front oil cooler. Is this accomplished by the pressure piston opening up a bypass, it doesn't look like it can close off the supply side? If it just opens up a bypass doesn't cold oil go up to the front cooler regardless of the bypass being open?
I've also put the regulator piston in an oil bath, it opens at about 215 degrees, this seems a little on the high side. What temp is the piston suppose to be extended at? I probably will be replacing the entire assembly due to the high temperature the regulator opens at and recent damage I did to the threads. I would still like to better undertand how this works though.

215 degrees is a little high- I think it should open around 190 or so.

That's right that is opening too hot. It should be about 190. I would get it replaced.

What's the acceptable range for opening? I thought I read where it should be right at 180 but of course I can't find the article right now.

After changing mine I run at 180 all the time except for when I'm sitting in traffic,(stopped) in the Boston summer heat. That is why the trombone is out and carrera cooler in going in as we speak.

I'm installing a Carrera cooler now, it replaces a trombone style cooler. In the midst of a 3.6 conversion so its really important to get maximum cooling. I live in a pretty mild climate so am hopeful that just the fender cooler with some ducting will be enough.
I'll be ordering up a new thermostat today but still wouldn't mind undertanding how they work.

Just a heads up, I ordered a thermostat today from Reeves Porsche in FL for $240. Is there a price matching policy in effect?

You don't need to replace the whole thermostat unit. Total fix is just $61.24. That is the cost for a regulator piston for the thermostat. It opens up at about 190. The part number at Pelican is H-107-1555-00.
