Fuel issues - help appreciated
Late last year I redid my fuel system (new lines in the tunnel, went to all -6AN line and fittings, added 2 russel inline fuel filters, PMO FPR, and walbro 255 pump). Car ran well for about a month, and on last drive of the season, it randomly lost power, and required sitting a few minutes before it would get going again.
This year it ran fine idling in the garage, but on the first drive of the season (last weekend) it ran fine for about an hour then started randomly dying, I could drive a few blocks and it would die again. I noticed that on a cold start the fuel pressure regulator (PMO unit) would read 4PSI, but when I started having trouble it read 0PSI. I swapped out my fuel pump for a similar unit (walbro 255), and it ran fine for about half hour, then started doing the same thing. I decided that maybe it was due to using a higher pressure pump, and regulating it down, so a few days ago I picked up a Carter 4600HP 7PSI pump. Car ran well for an hour, and then randomly lost power, not as bad as last time, but I noted that the FPR gauge read 0PSI when I pulled over. Next step is swapping out my PMO FPR for a different regulator, I think I have a holley kicking around somewhere. I would assume the 7PSI from the carter fuel pump is too high to run direct into the weber 40 carbs? Engine is a 2.2T am I missing any obvious troubleshooting steps? I'm by no means a mechanic, I just like tinkering with my old car. Fuel pump located in smugglers box, tank > -6AN shutoff > russel fuel filter > carter 4600HP pump > tuunel lines > russel fuel filter #2 > PMO FPR (with return line to tank) > PMO fuel bars on weber 40's ![]() ![]() ![]()

simplified question without the pre-amble - is it possible or likely that a PMO FPR can fail, or intermittently interrupt fuel delivery?

I see that your pump is in the smugglers box, that makes for some uphill draw from the tank to the pump.
In this case I think a gerotor is more appropriate. Is it possible the pump is having trouble being higher than the outlet of the tank?

I've played with the positioning of the pump, the second walbro I tried a week ago was placed on the floor of the smugglers box, below the fuel level, so there should not have been priming issues. the inlet and outlet of the fuel pump are also located about 3/4 up the fuel tank, so will a full tank the pump does not need to draw fuel for priming.

well, thread didn't really get any traction, but if anyone happens across this again, I swapped out my PMO FPR for a Holly FPR, deadheaded, no recirculation. seems to have smartened it up, running fine this evening.
