radar detectors
 

I want to install a radar detector in my '88 cab. I like the performance/features of the Valentine, but I don't want a big box dangling from my windshield. Since I have a cab, a windshield mounted detector is just too obvious. The concealed display module that Valentine sells, does not seem to remedy this as the receiver is still contained in the detector body and therefore must be mounted on the windshield. Also, since 911s don't have front grills, there is no place to mount the receiver of the remote Passport. Any solutions?

I was just thinking about this yesterday, as I hardwired my V1 in the Audi.

Somebody needs to make a setup where the sensor(s)/antenna(s) only are in a very small form factor, would could be mounted in a fairly concealed fashion. Perhaps even integrated into a stock-looking rear view mirror and/or 3rd brake light, or in the front grille, etc.

Then the electronics could be mounted under the dash, and the display/control panel in any convenient location or even integrated flush into the dash.

The installation would obviously be involved but the results could be cool.

I don't quite have the knowledge or spare cash to cannibalize a spare V1 to play around with this -- maybe an EE type on the board is willing to fiddle with a design?

VG-2 Concerns?
 

I take it you live in a state that radar detectors are illegal (like VA). I worked this issue over as well. Best I could come up with was going to one that had VG-2 protection (Radar Detector - Detector - Detector... yea I wrote that right). Also may want to look at a small cordless (some are not much larger than a garage door opener) and stick it on your visor or dash.

Bel seems to be the leader in this area.

Lewis - I put a V1 in my 88 Cab. Hardwired it and ran the wires underneath dash along door seals up to the passenger side visor where the V1 is clipped too. I mounted the extra display unit on top of steering wheel. Works great!

I mounted one of the late model Escort's to the windshield to my Cab and it is very discreet! Ran the wires around the windshield and placed it close to the rear view mirror. When I put the passnegers side visor down it is hardly noticable. I suspect you could do the same with a Valentine - I'm just not enough of a scofflaw to justify that expense?

Does anyone know if someone is making a remote sensor/antenna set up like Chris C. is talking about?

I think there is (used to be?) one called a K40? I recall reading about it some time ago. But in terms of functionality, I think the V1 has eclipsed the other models. I would want a setup with the sensitivity and directional indicators of the V1 for sure.

My V1 has saved my butt numerous times in recent months. My commute traverses about 15 miles of hardcore speed trap territory...each way.

cannot be remote mounted as easily as some others. Look at the Boxster Board for what some there have done. Or make a plastic box that sits behind or under the mirror to hold the V1.
