Cracked Dashboard repair

Been a while since this topic has been hit in the 911 forum.

I am interested in what repairs have been done on cracked dashboards. So if you repaired your dashboard in the past, let me know what your thoughts are. Thanks!

i recently had my dashboard reupholstered for $125. 65-68 have limited options considering they are NLA new. 69+ will not fit. excellent used units are rare. found a hot rod guy in the industrial part of town. very pleased. he did it in the same grain as the rest of the car.

I tried to repair my cracked dash in my 83SC with the Permatex kit from an autoparts store with very sad results, I decided to go with the carpet as a stop gap measure.I have since seen the color matched overlay and was quite impressed, wish I had gone that route.

I don't think a cracked dash can be repaired very well for the long term. Probably the best thing to do is to bite the bullet and send it to Just Dashes. Just like a new dash and warranteed for as long as you own the car.

yes justdashes.com does use the proper thermal vacuum process for the SWB cars but the price is $450. avail only in the sierra grain.

If a Coverlay vinyl cover is carefully fitted it looks better than a cracked or warped dash and makes a good stopgap until you are ready to replace the dash and windshield.
I put mine on this past fall, knowing it will be a few years until I repaint my car. When I do, I'll replace the windshield and dash all at once.

My car came with a light tan plastic dash cover, the PO purchased it from tweeks.
I hated it. It squeaked, looked like $hit, fit like $hit, every time I got in the car I cursed that thing.

It took a while, but eventually I found a real nice used brown leather dash (that's what was originally in the car).
Best thing I've done for the car to date.

Maybe some plastic covers are better than others, I don't know. But based on that experience I will never even think about owning another one.

I can't wait to get rid of my "dash toupee." I have a somewhat cracked replacement dash I plan on installing, as I think cracks are preferable to shiny, gross plastic. The PO installed mine, and I think that not all ABS covers are created equal. Mine is truly terrible.

It's just a matter of time before I rip out the dash cover (cap) that's in the 73E and put in a new dash pad. The cap is no substitute for the real thing.

I knew this would be an issue before I even found a car and snatched up a very nice used dash on Ebay for 225 bucks when nobody was looking. Has one hairline on the far left side that is tiny, but does not have the standard gaping flesh wound amidships. Still waiting to run out of other projects before I go down the install pain. It is all prepped with new clips installed, wrapped and stored int he garage.

Is it possible to buy a fiberglass dash and have it covered in Vinyl or Leather? I know that GT racing has the FG dash for $239.00.

The FG/CF dashes are molds of the original finished dash. There would not be enough room to lay down vinyl over that - the vinyl would crack if just laid straight over the FG and subjected to sun.

FYI- Just Dashes wants $450 for the dash, but an additional $85 to do the speaker grille. Ouch. I've now got two dashes that need doing- that's going to really hurt.

My dash hasn't cracked - I use a sunshade when it's in the sun.

How do you keep a good dash from cracking?

I had my interior guy cover mine in leather. Except for the warps, it looks wonderful. My guy did it with no problems.

Coverlay toupee. Needed mega amounts of silicone to keep it from rattling. Until the next time I burn up the windshield and have to pull it I'm OK with the look.

I have a little yellow rubber duck to cover my dash crack...the wife found it and thought it was what the car needed with all the damn leaks!

This will be until the total dash replacement!
