1970 hood latch issue

I'm stumped on this one. Its a project car and the hood has never closed properly. The safety catch hits the ramp on the wrong side (too far back) so the hood won't close. Its like the whole latch needs to move foward a 1/4". When I pull the safety latch forward with my finger it goes in the hole and the hood closes but not all the way. I have taken the hood latch off and it closes fine. The main prong wit the spring seems to go in hole just fine. There isn't enough adjustment anywhere to make a difference. Any ideas?

Has it ever closed properly since you have owned the car?

Is the hood the original? Latches original?

There could be some wear on the latch mechanism. But without a picture, it is hard to know.

Hood latch

Hi MattC2993, funny i have had a similiar problem on my
low miles original 84.and a 1972 i had years ago, so i did what i did on
the 72, just fitted a small quarter inch rubber vacuum stopper
thats available from all parts stores, just cut it in half , used the solid end
and pushed that up under the spring stopper,.That allows the stricker to
go down inside the correct place,But you still have to adjust the other main latch
so the hood closes correctly. After doing this ,have never had to touch it,regards.

That is the problem Wayne. I could tack weld a piece of metal in there but I was hoping for a different solution. The hood and hinges all look original.
