Porsche Classic Navigation Radio

It arrived today. The quality looks top notch and the screen is actually bigger than I thought it would be from the pictures in real life.

I can't install it for a couple of weeks as my 911 is getting a full gear box rebuild & WEVO updates etc which I am very excited to complete as the car will be done. I have a very adequate HU in the car currently but I always wished Blau had continued to make classic looking stereos with newer technology, like a 2016 Berlin would have been incredible.

This looks to fit the bill with what I want to accomplish and if it goes well it will be installed in my other Porsches.

I got mine from Sonnen for just under 1200. If you live out of California you avoid the 90 dollars tax we pay and I believe its the cheapest available. Sun coast is usually my go to but these guys were cheaper and shipping was 15 bucks for next day FedEx. Cannot complain.

Was considering this unit but was told by Suncoast that it does not have rca outputs. I plan on using an aftermarket arc audio amplifier so that's a deal breaker for me if true.

Can you confirm that? You're the first person I've seen that has actually got their hands on one.

Yes, please post some pics of the back/side of the unit.

This thing is unobtanium for me but still looks cool.

I just talked to my stereo guy and there is a Blau cable that ends in RCA's he said that will work just fine, in fact he said he would order it tomorrow.

It already comes with a direct link and cable for SAT. The unit displays all SAT information. The only thing it does not have is HD radio.

I wonder how much fidelity is lost using such a setup... What connection on the back of the radio is he intending on using the blaupunkt adapter?

Are you going with an external amplifier as well?

I love the look of this head unit but I'm cringing at the thought of spending this much money on a radio that may sound worse than a 200 dollar pioneer.

We got one in on Friday. Hard to believe the 3.5 inch screen is worth all the fuss.

I do not disbelieve in anything. I start from the premise that everything is true until proved false. Everything is possible.

LOL, I have a 200 dollar Pioneer now and an external Amplifier. These guys have been doing car stereo's for me since my Blaupunkt Dallas, I trust them to make it fine. As far as the adapter he said its no different than they having into and making a custom harness ( which they can do) Besides with as loud as my 911 is HiFi is not my aim here but a clean OEM look with BT for phone and various audio options.

I wouldn't count on being able to make calls clearly. It's rare even oem ones sound worth a damn, let alone aftermarket in a 3 decade old noisy sports car. Streaming Pandora via BT would be fantastic though.

When are you getting it installed? Curious if it lives up to the hype and more importantly price :-)

You can get the number 2 in pioneers lineup for about 300 dollars and it will knock your socks off with SQ and features.

I wish there were more plain, high quality radio choices. Too much of the new stuff is so flashy it feels like you have a disco ball in your dash.

Agreed. The nav is that unit will never be as good as Google maps on your phone.

This radio looks so damn nice though... I'm tempted. Wish it had at least 2, preferably 3 sets of rca outs though.

I agree most of the new stuff is junk.

I have usually sprung for the best HU's I can afford and as I got older I could usually afford the best. I had a Berlin and a Blau CD player and remember with separates I thought it was the best stereo in the world...until I got my CVA1000 from Alpine...it just never ends. I have a Tesla as a daily and the electronics are pretty damn good, my wifes 2016 S8 is also amazing. I have a 987 Spyder that I didn't want to do anything to but succumbed and did and for a open top its sounds pretty ok. My 951 has an amazing sounding system but the 911 was a battle and my shop convinced me to stay with the Bostons in it and just add a amp and the afore mentioned 200 dollar pioneer which has been good enough.

I wanted this because I don't want my phone hanging from cheesy adapter in the oft chance I was using the Nav feature. I saw this unit in Germany when we toured the factory when we picked up our Macan, it was really cool and I was buying it regardless...so I did

It will be installed in a couple of weeks. The scheduled 915 rebuild is underway so the 911 is at the shop. As soon as it gets back I will run it over to get this installed and I will report back.

The adapter will be here tomorrow and its a Blau part so I don't think sound quality will diminish from whatever fidelity this can muster. But frankly in this car I don't care I just wanted a HU that was OEM and I got it.

So you can the quality of their work, they made the custom speaker door enclosures on the 951, the Spyder's HU looks OEM with the trim they made and all I see when I look at my 911 is that out of place Pioneer ( even though it was the least Tokyo by Night I could find)

$1200!!!! Our old cars sound like a '67' VW with a huge hair dryer in the engine!! Add the wind and road noise and while cruising you just cannot hear the radio very well. That is why I bought a $200 Kenwood with blue tooth so I can make or get an important call and hear traffic reports. Only if you are driving through pretty, slower roads can you really hear quality radio.

So when you get that important call do you tell them you are blow drying your hair at the beauty parlor?

Very excited to see your install/thoughts. This is certainly one of the more interesting Porsche Classic parts to come out recently.

I will do a full review, install and actual use/sound/functionality. My cars gearbox should be complete in the next 10 days or so. ( much more excited about that!)
