Oil cooler conversion - top bracket mount suggestions

Hi -

I have all the parts needed to convert my SC to the later Carrera style cooler. I was poking around last night and didn't see any attachment points for the upper bracket on the back of the headlight bucket. What is the best solution for me?

1. Take out the headlight, drill a hole and attach with bolt and nut?
2. Design a bracket I can weld onto the inside of the fender?
3. Are there other existing mounting points I can use like the horn mounts?

I'm looking for suggestions and pictures of possible solutions. For reference this is a '80 SC with turbo fenders.

Thanks
Scott

I did the same thing with my '80 SC when I added a Carrera cooler. There was no top mounting tab/bracket. Porsche makes a little bracket for the top of the cooler at the headlight. I got mine from Elephant Racing but I think I had to modify it slightly (not difficult if I recall).

Make sure you have room to clear the horns, you may have to modify the horn bracket a little bit to prevent the cooler being to close to the tire.

When I upgraded mine - I took Option 1 from your list for the upper mounting location, fabbed my own bracket for the lower bracket.

Install the cooler temporally, position the top mount bracket so it mates up with the headlight bucket and the fit looks right, mark the spot through the hole with a marking pen or scratch all. Remove the cooler drill a 1/8 hole in the back of the bucket where you made the mark then use a 3/8" self taping lag bolt (from hardware store) thread in and secure bracket. Use a stainless or galvanized screw or spray some undercoat on it after to protect it.

Well as fate would have it the area that is supposed to contain the bracket for the oil cooler on the headlight bucket has been removed in favor of projector HID headlights. (see photo below)

I have been thinking about why there's a top mount. It looks like the bottom mount really holds the weight so I assume the top is to control movement forward / backward. In thinking that it's really not weight bearing I'm going to get some aluminum flat stock, attach it to the headlight bucket with a (short) lag bolt and tie it into the top bracket. Hopefully it'll be enough to just stop movement and prevent stressing of the lines.

Alternatively I can build off the fender bracket to hold the cooler mid-way up which should help the same way.

Thoughts?

I'm getting ready to order the kit from Pelican. I thought I read you had to move the horns and the upper mounting bracket is 930-207-921-00-OEM
