Stripped cv joint bolts

I have four hex bolts with stripped heads on my axle/cv joints where they connect at the wheels. Any suggestions on a solution? there must be a bolt removal tool that is made for this problem.

Thanks

You can use a good pair vise grip.

Heat, as in oxy/acel torch + Kroil (or PB Blaster) + vice grips.

You may be able to clean out the bolts and insert the driver deeper into the head. Use a mallet to sink it in good.

BFH and a cold chisel. Make a slot so the chisel will catch and try loosening by hitting with the BFH at an angle going counterclockwise of course.
I had to this for at least 2 bolts on each side.

If all else fails you can cut the heads off with a grinder.

vice grips work great so long as the brakes are on.

My thread with the same dilemma...

stripped 10mm CV joint bolt question

I ended up cutting it off with the heavier dremel cutting wheel.

Good luck

Mark

The cold chisel method takes considerable practice and has unpleasant consequences if not done properly. Also difficult to do in tight spaces. I practiced for years on stripped out philips head case screws on Hondas.
Use the tool John illustrated.

I end up cut the head of the bolt flush with the CV joint, remove the CV and use a pair of vice grip to take it out.

From lowes
Not recommended to use with impact. For cv bolts the 1/2 inch/13 mm worked great, tapped on with rubber mallet and had all 4 stripped bolts out in 5 minutes. Good luck, Tim

Nope, allen wrench. Six sided. Simple as that.

The only triple square I am aware of is for the door frame striker plate. I do believe it is 8mm.

OP did not state year of car. If is is a newer 911, 964 and forward, I can't comment. Wish my 81 had triple square but it does not. I just replaced all of them a few years back. Hex ports were getting tired and I am sure me and PO ham handing things was the problem.

I have the Irwin extractors. They are great but the bite can wear out over time on frequently used ones - i.e., 10mm size.

FYI Dude, I just bought the car and the damage was already done. Thank you for the insight though. Typical comment from a "self proclaimed genius" Tim

Give him a Mulligan. He is most probably pissed off about something else. It can happen.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.
