Road Trip 9500 miles in 30 days

Before college starts in the fall, my youngest son and I in our 87, starting from Miami Fl. Starting milage 145,xxx, middle of June Prep work: New rear tires, valve adjustment, oil and filter (Porsche Classic 10w-60), air filter, trans oil (Redline 75w-90 NS), fuel pump, pads, s/s brake lines , brake fluid flush, cap and rotor. Fuel filter was not changed, only had ~5k on it. Spare belts, DME relay, window switch, can of oil. First problem, had to push start in Gainesville FL, called ahead to *********** and they had a rebuilt Bosch waiting for us in the morning, Joest, the magician, was super nice and installed it while we talked...very laid back. The old starter was the original from the looks of it. Years ago while driving hard returning to Miami from Sebring it also didn't work. But the next day it worked and ever since then, so I forgot about it.

 Chatahoochee and Cherohala Skyway

We headed north to Robbinsville, NC, Tail of The Dragon, but first we stopped by Road Atlanta, there was nothing going on so just a quick look. Then thru Chattahoochee Forest and Blood Mtn..... good twisties....The Microtel at Robbinsville is a staging point for the bikers, super friendly, and recommended Cherohala Skyway rather than ToD , no traffic, more sweepers than 15mph turns. Looking back, a good choice. Good to be in the clouds. Encountered one Cayman going the other way.

Oak Ridge DOE and NCM track time

The Oak Ridge DOE Museum tour gave us a good history lesson tour by a docent on the Y-12, X-10 and K-25 facilities. Chilling. Currently as part of the DOE they had a 3D printed electric Cobra, go figure. Then on to the Corvette Nat Museum in Bowling Green, ....here is the rock that crushed a ZO6, oh yeah, gotta get a pic of THAT. But the good thing we discovered is that across the street was their track, empty, we paid the small fee and followed a ZO6 around as fast as we wanted for 5 laps, is proved very useful later during the trip as it provided a safe opportunity to see where the cars limits were and how the car felt at its limits. Got the track map decal too. The Vette chews up its front tires badly. My son did some laps with their driver, sounded really nice as it went by, cant do that in the street. Next stop Dayton OH.

So very cool. I've often dreamed of doing the same sometime. Maybe an odd question. My 82 has no AC, did you find that you were using AC often on your journey?

Thanks.....A/C yes, couldn't do it with out it. Those 3D printed fresh air nozzles we made worked great when it was cooler outside yet you still want fresh air on you and want the windows up.

 Museums Museums Museums

USAF Museum in Dayton is always interesting, they added a new wing with presidential planes and experimental types. Then on to Muncie Indiana and the AMA Museum, airplanes too but much smaller. The Chicago Museum of Science is a must if only for the only captured german U boat #505 a bone chilling tour of the insanity. And more airplanes at Oshkosh WI with a rest at Lake Winnebago. Car related stuff: Nothing to tell....mpg around 22.5 to 23+, cruising interstates at 75 or so. Only 2 other Porsches seen on the road and both in DT Chicago. Looks like nobody takes road trips in their P. Air con on most of the time, comfortable cruising. The car has the full Retroair kit plus their hi capacity front blower AND a Griffiths upgraded front condenser. Waiting to see how it all performs in the southwest. Oh , oil level has not changed, surprisingly. ( maybe its that P oil 10w-60)

 Minneapolis to Rapid City

Finally another aircooled, but it was a VW bus, were at the speed limit, 80 IIRC, with the ac on, its 90 or so and the guy is shirtless windows open going about 60. The road is mostly straight to the horizon. We do 600 miles in one day. A stop at an ICBM site and drive the short loop thru the Badlands was a relief. A huge rainstorm with crosswinds of 70 mph hit us as we were leaving the Badlands loop, luckily it ended as quickly as it started, lasted maybe a few minutes. The first rain of the trip. Little traffic, no sports cars. Pic below at the Badlands before the storm. We want to spend the night at Rapid City.

Thanks , we are back in Miami where I can go thru the hundreds of pics and post , couldn't while on the road. Actually we made a pit stop at my friends in Austin, very nice place in the NW of the city, and went to the dealer there to get oil and filter, apparently they cater to the aircooled cars as well and had everything in stock, unlike Miami dealers where even an oil filter has to be ordered.

Yep, Muncie , Indy track museum, Purdue overnight, a ghost town, then Gary and Chicago the next day with obligatory deep dish pizza lunch at a north end hole in the wall, Peqoud's, it was vg pizza..... It was late June and the sky was crystal clear , one could see the city from as far as Gary, awesome.

wrx....thought about it but there was nothing going on at Road America that day, just like at Road Atlanta when we drove up to it, so we decided to skip it even though it was on the itinerary! Evening sky from Purdue Chicago from Gary.... Deep dish, my favorite, ...mouth is watering right now

 Mt Rushmore and Lead

Otter, I'd say we're the minority The town of Keystone is picturesque then on to Mt Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, still being carved from the mountain top is impressive. We head north to Deadwood then left to the interesting mining town of Lead. My son gets a chance for a sure HOLE IN ONE for a buck, hit a golf ball into the one mile across open pit gold mine. More interesting is SURF, Sanford Underground Research Facility, neutrino detector built into the bottom of one of the shaft, and other cool astrophysics experiments. R.Davis got his Nobel prize in physics for his work there. Deep science at the frontier of physics | Sanford Underground Research Facility Keystone SD GW's profile Ready for a Hole in one Crazyhorse memorial being carved.

Awesome trip with your son. I did that with my dad and my 69 back in '09 heading home from the Monterey Historics. A trip to remember... Pequod's pizza is a Chicago area institution. You were too early to hit Oshkosh. The airshow starts this Monday. And unfortunately you were too early for the July vintage races at Road America. The best in the Midwest.
