Seeking a roof rack for 911 Targa!
I've read all the threads about racks for Targas, and it seems like there's a rack out there somewhere. If anyone who was interested had success, please do let me know! I've got a 1980 911sc with 40k on the clock being delivered in a couple of weeks, and I'm dying to get my surfboard on it! What good is a cherished toy if you can't carry other cherished toys, right?
Thanks for reading and for any help! Feel free to email me at adam_devine@hotmail.com. |

Take the top off while in transit and stand the board up in the passenger seat. securely strapped in of course.

Put two foamie tubes, the kind you put on a rack for a board, on top of the roof(to keep wax off) Take two long bungies, and strap it down, window to window. Put more foam on the edges of the targa top to protect it from the bungies....and keep the speed down.
Good luck....

Another option is to purchase the Fiber Glass top for a Targa. Then use a Yakima type 'rail rider' system that bolts through the top. Did this with a spare top on the 914-6 3.2 and carried kayaks. Can you say one fast shuttle machine

I vaguely remember a targa roof rack from way back wo. A quick google turned up this targa ski rack that sold on ebay Switzerland:
Here's the page: I can't figure out how this mounts - and I've owned a targa. Maybe you can use this as a model to have something fabricated. Where there's a will... Just don't expect Pep Boys to carry one. |

On second thought - after studying the pics a bit more - I believe that the upper bar in the pics mounts to the front of the targa bar while the lower bar mounts to the front of the windshield frame. If you really want to go professional on this (and considering the weight difference between skis and a surf board), then have a rectangular frame welded up that mounts similar to the way this rack mounts. With everything tied together, carrying a surfboard shouldn't be a prob. It's not going to be real cheap - but then again you're driving a Porsche.

From this thread: Roof rack for 911sc Targa?
Which in turn contains pictures from this thread: Is there a bike rack available for a targa? Such as this:

surf's up
I think for a surfboard, you can probably create a system that's cheap and easy to use. The key is to keep the board and sand elevated above the targa roof to prevent damage.
My wife's mom (who lives in San Clemente) has a "soft" rack with straps that go across the roof, but have large foam pads on them. She doesn't surf, but we use this a lot when we visit, on her cars or a rental to haul boards. I think this was purchased at a surf shop. The advantage is that you could store it inside the car when not in use, as it folds up nicely. I'll try to track down the brand name for you. It would be easy to fabricate something like this: a few straps running through some foam pipe insulation would be the most basic permutation. I guess it all depends on how fancy you want it to be. Or, attach a bumper rack and carry your boards vertically (not the most elegant solution, IMO) Good luck. --- Tom |

Jumping in on this thread... I've been trying to figure out how to put a surfboard on my 87 Targa as well. My current idea is to find an old targa top and use the frame. To that, you could weld a thule or other surfboard rack, such as Thule Board Shuttle 811XT | Thule | USA
This way when I needed the rack, I could remove my current top, which is in good condition, and i don't want to mess with, and attach the custom surf rack. Any thoughts on this approach? Where can I find an old targa frame that fits the 87? |
