key broke in ignition switch...help
 

My key broke in the ignition switch today. I can still turn it, but it requires a flat head screw driver. I can't get it out.

I tried pushing the ignition switch out of the dash board, but there is too much obstruction. Ultimately that will have to be done unless there's an easier way.

Does anyone know a way to pull the broke key out without removing the whole switch? I've tried needle nose pliers, but they won't grip the broken edge. I'm thinking about a dab of glue on the end of a toothpick, but doubt that is strong enough.

This was discussed recently. One suggestion involved two hooked pieces of wire.

Personally I would try the glue trick or anything else I could think of, since you're most likely going to have to replace it anyways. BUt not with a toothpick.

Another note, if you get to where the ignition portion is jacked up and won't work, you can just unplug the electric portion on the back, and start the car with a phillips headed screw driver(just wanted to let you know, in case you messed the ignition switch to where you can't start the car).

Well it came out after I pulled into the garage and put a bright light on the problem. I pinched the tip of a very small needle nose plier on the fragmented splinter of the key and it came out after about 20 trys.

Makaio, It's good to know that all you have to do is unplug the back of the ignition switch and use a screw driver to start the car. I'll be more protective about how I leave the car around from now on.
