Another Kumho 712 blowout

The inside sidewall of my left rear tire blew out last night while travelling in a straight line at 70mph. Luckily no spins or damage like Mike Mueller just experienced with his 964. I found a half inch slice through the tread, so I must have lost air pressure and never noticed until the sidewall let go.

My spare did fine for the 3 hour drive home, but now I see it got a nasty slash sometime during the drive. It wasn't like this when I put it on.

Anyone ever replace one of these collapsible tires?

I'd hate to think what those collapsible tyres cost new! You're probably better off buying a good used one (with wheelrim) from a parts car.

I am considering Kuhmo 712s. I have heard they're a great street tyre for the money.

Geez Man,

Where were you driving, Somolia?

Lucky you did not have 2 blowouts on the same trip.

I hope this isn't a trend. The two people who've had problems with their Kumhos could do us all a favor and report the problem to:
http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/

Just click on "complaint form." There does seem to be quite a few reports of failures of Kumhos.

Well, I'm not going to make a complaint. The tire was obviously punctured, resulting in a loss of air pressure. You can't really expect the tire to hold up well at 70mph with no air. (except perhaps for run-flats)

The roads I travelled last night were very 'clean', as far as I could tell. It never felt like I ran over anything, but both tires were damaged !

2 slices on 2 different tires on the same corner on the same drive? What are the odds of that?

Rob, I'm just glad you are okay! You might check with your state's highway division...just to see if others experienced problems. Recently in the Portland (OR) area, some freeway stretches were shut down. A truck driver for a snack food company had a container leak...unknowingly, he scattered thousands of gallons of vegetable oil over miles of freeway. Yep, a mess of bent metal resulted, luckily nobody killed. Your two tires damaged makes me wonder about sharp objects spillage? May not be the brand of tire, but just the fickle finger of fate?

As some of you may recall, I had a similar sidewall-separation blowout on a Kumho V700 about 18 months ago.

In my case there was no detectible puncture or slash that would have led to a pressure loss. I never felt it go soft, and had checked the pressure the day before the blowout.

At the time I wrote it off as a "fluke" but after seeing other failure stories, now I am getting a bit sketched out re. these tires. FWIW the other 3 and the replacement for the blown tire lived out the rest of their lives w/o probs.
