Smile Budget Fuchs Makeover (pics)

One of these days these Fuchs will be getting the re-finishing they deserve, but in the meantime I went ahead and did the budget makeover for the price of a can of spray paint and masking tape. Taping took about 20 minutes per wheel and three light coats of flat black engine enamel were applied. Pictured are before, taped and after. They look a hell of a lot better!

This is for all of you guys that want to improve the looks of your car, have some artistic skills, but are unfortunately likewise on a bit of a budget!

Out of curiousity (and because I am on the verge of redoing my own), what is the official black? Matte? Gloss? Flat?

I've found "Satin Trim" paint to be a close match. Wurth makes it but there are other brands that sell it. If you can't find that, a satin or semi flat is also close. Flat black paint does not do well with washing and dirt.

Do a search here on the board. I *think* the color of choice is a flat black by Wurth.

I bet if you took something like simichrome and polished the aluminum, they would sparkel, nice job looks great, Kevin

It wasn't 'Mother's', but I've tried using aluminum polish and it helps, but still not wonderful. Bodyshop tried to do me a 'favor' a couple of months ago by putting something on the black part of the fuchs to make them shine kind of like vaseline and the first time they got wet it ran and seems to have etched the finish...I still haven't gotten rid of all the streaks.

PO must have re-painted as well, but wasn't as steady a hand. Any ideas what will remove that old paint still visible at some of the edges, but won't harm the anodized finish?

You did this with them mounted to the car?

I eyed a garaged '82 930 the other day with 800 orig miles. The black Fuchs looked matte to my eye...def not flat black. Made a mental note as this same project is on my list too. I'm going to have the lips professionally de-anodized & polished then bring the wheels home for a day to work on the black centers myself...mask,200 wet sand, grey prime, 600 dry sand and spray matte/satin.

A nice way to prevent overspray on the rubber is this: Pour liquid detergent in a bowl and, using a 4" brush, brush the tire rubber to cover it with the detergent, being careful not to let it drip on any area you intend to spray.

The viscous nature of the liquid means it stays put. After the paint totally dries, use water to remove the liquid detergent.

This works best with a wheel laid down flat, but will also work with the wheel in a vertical position.

OT, but I can't help myself

An 82 930 with 800 original miles is a crime. I'll never understand people buying these fabulously enjoyable toys for museum pieces. That poor sad car needs to be taken out of hibernation and DRIVEN!

Big Ed,
I hear yah. This car was in company with 4 other turbos up to'96 all with less than 13K miles. They live in an air conditioned, tile floored garage. While an incredible collection, it was at the same time heart wrenching.
The owner saidf "I just like to look at them..." He does run them once a month for a few minutes....sorry.

The sad part is that by the time someone actually decides to drive that car, every bit of rubber gasket, hose, and seal is going to be so deteriorated from sitting that it's going to need an 800 mile rebuild.
