Window regulator help-Slow window
 

All,
Passenger window has been getting slower and slower to go up and down. Last night I replaced the vertical window felts. Didn't help except to reduce the rattles. BTW John Walker's technique works perfectly. Very easy to do. Decided to take out window regulator and take a look-see. Nothing broken, but the pivot at the green arrow is difficult to rotate. How much force should it take to manually move it there? I understand the spring is supposed to help but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. Granted I have not cleaned up the regulator yet but just wanted to get a consensus on how much force it should take to rotate. Also you can see at the red arrow that there is quite a bit of wear on the gear. Once I get that cleaned up I think I will have a better idea of actually how bad it is. If anybody has recently taken one apart maybe you can let me know how yours rotated.

My 930 has the exact same symptom. Did you ever figure out what the problem was?

Do you have power windows? If so, one cause for lift time to be slowing down is if the electrical connections have become corroded. You may want to check the connections and make sure that they are clean.

the motors get weak also. old grease sometimes gets gummy and firm, so a good cleaning and fresh white lube often helps a lot. that pivot point usually doesn't rust, being that the pin is aluminum or pot metal, but often the pin breaks, allowing the arms to seperate, so take a good look at it. there are steel replacements available.

Will the manual widow regulaters from a 69 fit into a 79 that had power. RS style clone.....

John what's your technique for replacing these ? Can it be done without removing the window frame ? I have to rebuild mine.

I have heard of people lubricating the rubber with stuff. I would think dry teflon would be nice any ideas ?:p

There were a few problems with the regulator but nothing major. If you look at the picture you will notice that the spring retainer is gone. It is supposed to be at about the 7 o'clock position. It was sitting in the bottom of the door. It is made from aluminum and peened over into the regulator. I decided to fab a new one out of steel so I could weld the two pieces together. I don't have a picture but basically I got a 3/8"-1/2" steel rod, cut it to length and welded it to the regulator. Made a slit with a wheel grinder for the spring. Installed the "helper" spring and it was fixed. I then cleaned everything up real well and greased everything. The hardest part for me was getting the d*mn thing back in the door. What a PITA!!! I also took apart the motor and cleaned everything up in there and re-greased it. Put everything back together and it worked like a champ.

Do a search on window felt and you will come across John's technique. He goes over it step by step. Very easy, 30 minutes per window. Makes a huge difference. Windows don't rattle at all.
