stevej37: I will look at the clips. A couple days ago, I put the top on and pressed down on the front while turning the hold down clip. NO NOISE at 80 mph.
So, I may be able to permanently fix the issue by removing, cleaning the channel, and carefully reinstalling the seal. We'll see. Again, my long term plan is to replace both the front and rear Targa seals and have Dan rebuild the top. I'll have to wait for the DOW to get to 3,000. Thanks to all for your good suggestions. |
Yes, if you could get that front seal down to where it supposed to be, it will fix 90% of any issues.
Side effects, you may need to lower the quarter window and window too, again where it should be and making sure the window fits into the side channels on side rubber seals on the top. Just follow the manual and watch the video :D |

Home made top clip
My new Targa had the same problem. It turned out to be the clips. Since the Pelican ones are not refundable and $20 each I decided to make my own and see if it works. It did!
Just used some aluminum 1/8" thick stock, cut out a flat piece resembling the original with a Dremel, then bent it in a vise. Will paint it black. It doesn't show anyway when the top is closed.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1486924583.jpg |
^^^excellent job!! That's the length that the Pelican ones should be.
You could sell those easily. |
Home made top clips
They take a couple of hours each to fabricate by hand. Do the new Pelican ones work? I couldn't tell by the diagram in the catalog if they were much bigger than the originals. If anyone still has a problem with the Pelican ones I can make a few. But I'll have to charge $40 each and I'm not anxious to be in that business.

Aluminum may be too soft. Lots of NVH in the top at speed...

We'll see, I'll report back in a few months. 10" snow here in CT. Volvo weather.
Can always make them out of stainless but cutting will be a pain. |
I had been meaning to do something about the noise my Targa makes when I have the roof on (which is rare to be fair) so this hadn't been a major issue. Having read the advice here I decided to investigate the clips and established that some of the clips that clip against at the front were not adjusted so that they seated all the way in and one was slightly loose.
I decided to go to the hardware store and purchased some replacement screws as some of the screws (countersunk M4*8mm) were past their best. I replaced all the screws and adjusted the clips so that they seat better (more completely). I have a feeling that, as explained above, when at speed there is sufficient low pressure above the roof and backwards on the front bar that the clips don't quite hold on sufficiently. I find that when driving at 60kmh the roof is silent but when you get to 80kmh and above the roof suddenly makes a noise suggesting that the roof raises and wind then buffets the edge which must not be flush any longer. If the adjustment doesn't work I may make a couple of the clips as shown above to hold on more firmly even when the front bar moves backwards slightly. I believe it is only the middle-most 2 front clips that have the issue. Thanks for the helpful advice here as ever. Cheers, Neil |
