Front End Noise
 

Hi guys...

I could use some help determining what to start looking for, in order to diagnose a noise my car has developed...

Where it is:
-passenger front, '81 911sc

What it does:
-slight rubbing sound when turning left above 10-15 mph.
-doesn't sound like a grinding, more two surfaces rubbing

What it doesn't do:
-change/quit when brakes are applied
-make noise in straight or right hand turns

What I've looked at/checked:
-lugnut torqued properly
-caliper bolts
-spindle nut
-contol arm bolts
-strut bolts
-tie rod bolts
-fender clearance (no evidence of rubbing)
-strut hardware
-wheel bearing grease/dust cover

All seems tight and no visible evidence of rubbing... Any other ideas? Probably going take to my mechanic, but would love any thoughts...

Have you checked the Tyre for any signs of rubbing. The passenger side is where the additional oil cooler is, just in case somethings loose and rubbing.

I say it is your wheel bearings.

While on the ground, reach in and grab the tire with both hands, push and pull. if there is slop most likely the bearings need to be adjusted/tightened.

To confirm, raise the car and grab the wheel at 1:30 and 7:30 push and pull. Grab it at 10:30 and 4:30 push and pull

Tires, maybe, how old are they and how much air do you have in front.

What is the camber setting?

Inside and outside of the tire look fine...also, oil cooler appears to be intact and also shows no signs of rubbing.

I'm kind of leaning toward wheel bearings too. There is some play, though it is consistent with the play on the driver side, which is not making noise. (That doesnt mean the bearing isnt going out, just comparing.)

Not sure what the camber is, as I havent gotten into the suspension/alignment at all.

Tire pressure is 29psi, and the tires are old-ish.

To check the wheel bearing you really need the wheels off the ground and then grab the wheel at 9 and 3 O´clock and then at 12 and 6 to see if there is any play.

On turns there is more pressure on the bearings and if loose will make that annoying grinding noise.

Try tightening it and see if will re-produce the noise. If it continues then most likely you need to replace them.
