Broken down near Pt. Reyes, CA

My day just got complicated. Driving on Highway 1 south of Olema, I felt a couple of momentary losses of power. Then I came to an intersection, and when I went to pull away, the car died completely. Luckily I was next to a hotel, so I rolled into their parking lot.

The car will crank strongly, but won't start. It has a half full tank, and oil and temps were fine before this happened. After sitting for a few minutes I was able to get it to start, it ran roughly for about 30 seconds, then died again.

I just got this car a month or so ago, it's my first 911. In the engine bay, everything looks fine in terms of wires and distributor cap. I'm worried the DME relay has quit, and of course I don't have a spare. I have the Porsche tool kit and access to the internet. Can anyone offer any advice before I call a tow truck? I can send my cell number if someone wants to call and talk.

1988 911.

Sounds like the flywheel sensors are going out.

The warmer temp today doesn't help. You can try spraying some water on them and see it that "fixes" the problem.

Hopefully it is just the DME relay, if not it will be as above, Speed and or Reference Sensor. Interesting about the water thing. Give it a try but before that you should try a new DME relay if you do not smell fuel at the tail pipe.

Worse case would be a failed solder joint in the DME (ECU)

Wishing for the best,

You can bypass the DME relay by placing a jumper wire between pin 30 (12v) and pin 87b (power to fuel pump) and 87 (power to DME). This will get you home in a bind, if you park the car remove the jumper or it will eventually kill the battery.

My best hope for a jumper wire right now is a paper clip, so I don't think I'll try that. A tow is on the way.

It has sat for an hour (in the sun) and still only runs for a few seconds before dying.

I have a DME relay in my God damned Pelican shopping cart!! I just hadn't placed the order yet!

This car has to be towed on a flat bed, right? Just checking. It's not here yet.

The car is home, no drama. Hopefully I can get it sorted out soon. After the initial stall, I was able to get it to run two more times for about 30 seconds before it quit. After that it would only crank and not start at all. This makes me suspect that it was running on residual fuel those two times, and now has none. I.E. it's the DME. Does that logic make sense? I'll try the jumper to see if I can get it to run in the garage.

Or starter fluid? But be careful and sparingly on it. Just spray into air filter. If it starts and runs for a brief moment then bingo DME Relay :-)

If you are going to jumper it, build a jumper rig as described in the Bentley with a inline fuse, just in case. Very easy to build and parts are at the FLAPS. If there is a local 3.2 in your area, they may have a spare to lend. Calling all SF Pelicans, SOS SOS

Did this trick when helping my buddy with his 86 3.2 and it would not start due to a bad pump, yes, dead pump. I'm sure not in your case.

I already have a new DME on order just to keep in the glove box, it may get here before I have time to try anything else. I don't have starter fluid on hand. I have a local 911 buddy I can call on if need be. Guess I should buy the Bentley manual now, I've always had the shop manual for my other cars.

Yeah, Bentley is not perfect but acceptable.

You will find some torque figures are off but at least you can call them for clarification, hopefully all my calls to them will fix the next edition. Yeah, I am a nightmare

Is that a toggle switch at the top? Why? And doesn't it need 3 leads? I'm an electronics guy, show me a schematic
