Mulholland Drive

Hello Pelicans,

Don't know if this is the right place or not but,

My Dad is flying in to visit in Nov and has said he would like to drive Mulholland Drive. I guess what I'm looking for is advice on what else I/we should see and do when we are up there. I'm thinking we would go mid week to miss the weekend warriors and spandex crew. I live in San Diego so I was thinking I could make a little more of a trip, go up in the day, eat, sleep, Drive in the A.M and see/do some other things before heading South. General info on the road, ideas on things to do/see. Places to eat and sleep would be gratefully received.

Techno,

Thanks for the idea, strangely we have both already done that, just not together! Maybe we will go together.

I tried to get on mullholland drive twice when I was in cali and failed. one end was some park or walking trail thing and was a dead end, the other way I tried turned into a rough dirt road so I gave up , must be a secret guarded by the locals I guess.

The Mulholland trip is a great idea -- I like to get on at the start off of Cahuenga jut above Highland and take all the way til you can't anymore - it becomes dirt - one day the dirt part was open and I leanred to drift my 911 - then drop down into the valley and pick it up again east of Topanga all the way to the PCH -- for my money once you are in those Malibu Canyons you can't go wrong - Decker, Piuma, Kanan or Topanga itself -- last time I did this route I ran into Chris Harris in a GT4 and a dude in Singer -- had a chat with Chris -- real good guy

I also love to hit the Venice Abbot Kinney strip - try abbot's habit salad pizza - or Silverlake along Sunset when I'm down there -- more for the vibe etc and also pretty good 911s end up at Mistress car shop on Fountain

And I also enjoy Melrose in Hollywood/West Hollywood -- again, more for vibe and a coffee stroll. It's the first neighbourhood I lived in when down there and the whole Fairfax Beverly Melrose Highland square is fun retail and cool.

And lastly - downtown arts district = awesome. You may even see Magnus, who like Chris Harris - will be more interested in your ride than talking about his.

Eating = Kings Rd Cafe, Swingers, , Taco Zone truck on Alvarado and Montana will change your world, SugarFish for sushi, El Condor, Millie's, Flore, Local -- last 4 in Silverlake.

Seriously drive slowly on the curve just past the Rock Store. Bad Mojo. Google it. A video guy hangs there to get crash pics.

If you are lucky, you might be able to visit All American Racers. Dan Gurney's shop in Santa Ana. I dropped in out of the blue a few years ago, and had a very enjoyable couple of hours talking about racing with one of my childhood heroes.
He even gave me a guided tour of the facility.
A really unbelievable experience.
