Heavy Gurgling on deceleration
I ve noticed of late that if I decelerate in gear (generally let off the gas above 300 rpm) I am getting a lot of burble from the exhaust, more then I ve noticed before. I know the exhaust system is buttoned up tight so need some advice where to look next. Mind you its not a back fire but a constant burble that is just louder then before
Its a 77 Targa with 83 SC engine 1 had a loose fitting injector sleeve in one cylinder which I reseated (the metal fuel line was pulling it upward) but I am not yet convinced it 100% airtight...could this result in poor fuel burning and thus the excessive decel noise? I could test by picking up a new o ring for the sleeve and redoing that one, I guess too that checking/replacing the plug as it may be fouled as a result of poor ignition? I ve looked through for the usual suspects like air leaks but nothing to be found and other then on decel, it runs and idles very well. anywhere else I should be looking? Thanks Bob |

nobody has an opinion?
could a loose air filter cover be the source of the issue? |

Some folks pay extra for heavy gurgling
![]() Just sayin' ... Having said that, decel valve, assuming the transplant has one ? |

could be a number of things. From an overly rich condition. Decel valve allows more air compensating for that. But if its working then possibly a leaky injector? I dont think air leaks would cause gurgling but could be wrong. Is there a cold start valve on these I forget. Maybe try leaning it out a hair and see what it does.

everything suggested check by my porsche specialist including running a smoke test..all good. Adjusted fuel mixture a minute amount but they feel that its perhaps a baffle in the exhaust that may have reached its end. I will leave for now and start to consider a new exhaust (2 in 1 out) that is less sporty (aka loud). Any suggestions, its an 83 sc engine, i love the after market units but they all seam geared to louder sporty sounds verus a little more sedate i am seeking

One of the symptoms I had when my CIS airbox developed a crack was some fun exhaust gurgles. It got worse and worse until idle was not steady.

I was looking for the same in a muffler, my research lead me to Monty. I just installed SSIs and a 2 in 1 out Monty muffler (model M21) on my '79 SC. Very refined sound, no drone or resonance at all. Very sedate from the driver's seat, especially on cruise. It has a bit of a growl on throttle, but again not obnoxious in the cabin. It still sounds like a Porsche to me, I find some of the loud ones sound more like a muscle car. Very happy.
