3.6 conversion Customs; Part two
 

First with all the crazy stuff in the world, And I have long hair, I was ready to be pushed to ground by several cops, Ok, Ok, to many movies, on monday i was told by harald the 3.6 would be in tuesday, so i took the day off, bad idea, it takes the air line a day to get it to the dock, the expediters a day to do documents, things got crazy when the expediters told me i owned 500 more for shipping, I e-mailed Harald, he calls me here in the states he says its bs, he calls his expediter they call here and clear it up, Harald called me twice thatday, Thanks Harald, anyway Harald did this at like 9pm his time, So he went totaly out of his way for me, the expeditor called me at 6 and said all is cool, the expediter told me one hr at thier place, 2.5 hrs at customs and an hour at the dock, plus 2.15 to get to Chicago, wow 9hrs, i get to Chicago map quest takes me right to th expediters door, it takes me 5 minutes to get the documents, saved 55 minutes, I get directions to Customs, takes 5 minutes to get thier, walk in no one is in line, the lady helps me and even fills out half the paper work, total time 15 minutes, I ask why they said two hrs, she said usualy a line wrapping around the place, my lucky day saved two hrs, but where is the dock she doesnt know, a kid next to me that walks in say i know and gives perfect directions to the dock, 5 minutes, the dock tells me to back my semi up to door ten, i said what semi i have a van, oh no trouble, Hes says he doesnt want to drop my air plane motor on the ground, I scratch my head o ok, finaly i drive around to the back where they have a ramp some big burley mob guy (he doesnt look happy) drives a fork lift out, opens the over head door and viola there she was, well the crate at least, tears came to my eyes, simular to the thrill of your first lay, any way the big mob guy walks back out picks it up with the fork lift, I open the side doors on the van, hes says im not gonna do this i might hit that nice van, I say f the van worry about the motor, so he ever so gently puts it in perfect fit, I tip him a 10, he smiles and gives me perfect directions back to the interestate, wow, i was only in Chicago like an hr, anyway, the first picture is the dock and Crate, the second is the building, the third is the Customs car, Tomorrow I gotta figure out how to get it out of the van, should be interesting, cant wait to see her, ill post more pictures, I will say that Harald has bent over backwards every inch of the way for me, the crate he used is amazingly sturdy as the dock guy stated (burley mob guy) not a scratch on the crate, Kevinhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/DCP_0012.JPG

Customs car they chase people with, not really but sounds good

I've done the importer-and-customs thing a few times now (motor from Germany, brakes and wheels from Singapore), and it's always an education, but usually not as bad as you'd expect -- considering what an arcane world it is, with its own rules and secrets.

It can be navigated, even by a slow guy like me. ;)

I got as much as i could from harald, i really need to take inventory, i am gonna use my old sachs clutch, i got the loom to the computer, the computer, the right tranny studs etc, i think I need a flywheel, motormount, the engine tin cut, im gonna bolt the tranny up and look at the exhaust, im really not sure i wish some one had a conversion list, as for the pulleys im not changing the bottom one, maybe the top not sure yet, i wanna put the air back in, and the wiring, that may be the big one, im just not sure on where everything goes, At some time i plan to talk to timmins or patrick motorsports on parts, i need the motor mount reworked so ill probably get a few other parts at the same time, i wish the b&b headers werent so expensive, well i really dont know but have a guess, maybe we can do a team buy, your black targa looks just like my car before i did the widebody-speedyellow paint, Kevin

The Dr.'s website has pretty good info on whats needed and what works best. It's not a punch list but would help if you were creating one. He's also been very responsive to my e-mails.

I admire you doing the work yourself, I don't have that kind of time so am buying a crate motor. I do have the same concern as to where everything goes. I removed my 3.0L back in October and labeled everything well. Just don't have a lot of technical info on the 3.6L. Might have to spend the bucks on the factory 964 manuals.

Kevein, I am sure you have seen this in one of Bill V's posts, but he has some very good links on the conversion here Especially check out the conversion performed by Jim Williams. He provides a very detailed accounting of the actual work performed from cutting the trans housing for the DME sensor to the wiring and engine tin mods. After I read his site I believe that once all the parts are gathered the entire process shouldn't take more than a weekend.

pbs911 I havent found anything yet beyound my capabilities, sourcing all the parts is the trick, In know theres timmins and patrick motorsports, but im waiting to see what i can gather up before, i call them, Kevin

Kevin - great story and congrats on a (rare) success story with customs.

BTW, best line of your post was "I say f the van, worry about the motor" I'm still laughing at that one ... :D

I'll also throw in a good word for Harald, he has been watching my posts and has helped me with several issues that he didn't make a dime on. It's a good person that does things like that.

Lew i believe a expediter buys large air plane spaces and brings in a compulation of packages, the compulation my motor came with was with 28 other pckages, Kevin

I think Lew was refering to the long process. Hardly what you could refer to as expediant.:)
