Do I really need a new alignment job, not a Porsche
Guys,
I went to this alignment place several times and still feel that it's not "right" with my butt dyno :D, paid, because I waited longer than the guaranty period. So, I went to a new place and remembered to request a print out. Do you guys think I need a new alignment job? Note: this is a Toyota Sienna van. Thanks. What do "before" and "actual" mean? What is SAI? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1464996021.jpg |
What did the tech say about your current settings?
Are you having tire wear problems? Or handling or squealing issues? SAI = Steering Axis Inclination, not sure if this is adjustable on you car. Probably a check for bent struts. I think that -2 deg camber on the rear is excessive for a mini van. |
I think "before" is what it was before the alignment was done and "actual" is the reading post-alignment.
If I'm right then I would be concerned with the fact that the alignment didn't seem to get some of these readings into spec. "Actual" shouldn't be out of spec. This may help interpret some. Understanding Reading Alignment Specifications. This article also said: "If for whatever reason your vehicle can't reach within the acceptable range, replacing bent parts or an aftermarket alignment kit will be required." Tire Tech Information - Alignment. You might have some damaged parts. Anyway hope that's of some help. |
this is the reading/check only at the new place. I have done alignment with the other place several times, but this time the steering whee jump/shake at high speed, around 70 mph. I have not done the alignment with the new place. that is why I confuse about "before" and "actual". They should be the same, right?
Of course the tech told me that I need an alignment. |
Well, you got a base reading to figure out what is going on and where to go from there.
The symptoms you described sounds like a shock/strut issue or a worn out steering rack bushing or control arm bushing. Raise the front end safely, push and pull the wheel to check if you can see where it is faulty. When my Lexus steering went crazy it was the control arm bushing and steering rack bushings that deteriorated. The chain stores will not tell you this until they can not fake align anymore. For the rear, it could be a bushing gone on a control arm or you will need a camber kit as the rears are fixed on Toyotas |
Take this to a Toyota Forum. If your model has specific flaws, they will be known.

LOL, he only trusts us :D

on a Sienna the rear is not adjustable at all. The castor is not adjustable on the front and the camber is pretty good. The toe is out. This looks like a hunter printout and it shows that the toe is still out and not adjusted. is the steering wheel straight because it looks as if it wasnt centered before the readings were taken, one side is toe in and one is toe out.

The stereo on my subaru keeps turnng off by itself....oh sorry I will take it to NASIOC.
Whats NASIOC for Toyota minivans? Or try Off Topic Discussions - Pelican Parts Technical BBS |
this, answer for me. Thanks. :D
I tried checking bearing by yanking the wheels, but have not jacking it up. I went to Toyota and Lexus in the past for several other issues, usually without a result. Thanks guys, so looks like the current alignment spec, good or bad, doesn't make my steering wheel jump/shake Quote:
|
steering wheel shake is most often a tire balance issue and/or worn shock issue. Not usually related to alignment unless the tires are worn and cupped from being out of alignment.

I had a sienna that had chronic front wheel shimmy. Bugged the crap out of me. Turned out It was simply tires. Seems they are sensitive to tire condition. My solution was to sell the sienna and get a cayenne ;)

thanks guys

I'll come over and take a look :-)
