Doors off-How to function check everything inside
Hi I have a 2 day new to me 86 coupe project car. The previous owner took off the doors to run down a power window problem in the passenger door. He had put in a new drivers switch I believe. Anyways, since they are off, what needs to be attended to inside? I want to function check Window regulators/motors, wiring continuity, door handle function, mirrors, door stay reinforcement. I have a Bentley manual on the way. I have some experience 25 yrs ago on VW's. I must admit I hate door troubleshooting, but now that it is off the car I want to R&R whatever I need to. Cost not major factor, just thoroughness as this is one of the toughest places to work on in German cars. This is my first PP forum post so please pardon any mistakes.:)

I like to wash out the bottom of the door to clear all the debris and make sure the drain holes are clear. Once everything is dry spray the lock mechanisms and door stay mechanism and the crevices with Wurth HKS lube.

Picture of the car is customary here in your first post/thread. Let's see her!!!
Check striker alignment, seals, water barrier (needs flaps - recent thread on this) , mirror wires and adjuster function, door trim and felt at top (hard to get at without glass removal), regulator arm lubrication, lock mechanism lubrication, and that RStarga said. If it's a targa, I'll keep going! |
