Progress, not ready to declare victory
 

OK, so I removed the ECU and the DME relay last night, opened up the ECU, removed and reseated the chip, put it all back together, and taped it up.

I opened up the DME relay and checked it out but the one I had in there said "Made in Hungary" and the new one I got said "Made in Germany" so I said, what the hell, and swapped it out.

I drove around for 40 minutes or so yesterday and flogged it a bit once it got up to the temp where I was previously having issues, and I had no problems. I'll drive it hard over the weekend and pray to the Porsche Gods that the issue is resolved.

Thanks for all the tips and tricks guys. From this thread I've also learned that I need to buy a voltimeter AND a stethoscope.

I had an AMG before this car, and I have to say, the community there was friendly and knowledgeable, but this community is TOPS.

I DID take some pictures of the DME, and noticed a weird tree-sap stuff on it. Pics attached.

Yeah, just have to make sure the harness clicks. I don't know how many times I have assisted guys that have not seated the harness properly. Me guilty too

But maybe it was the German relay?

If I may suggest, to find a culprit component, do one repair at a time to be sure. I know annoying as hell but, only if you want to know for sure.

I do have one more question though!
 

I'm still having one issue where it revs up from idle to around 1500 or 2k when I'm at a stop. Happens very rarely, and only when the car is warmed up.


Steve mentioned it might be the idle control valve being stuck. Any other thoughts?

I concur, if it has not been serviced, it should.

TEST: next time it "hunts", have a screw driver handy and pull over, leave the car on pull the e-brake, open the lid and with the handle side, tap on the ICV. if it clears up, BINGO.

Take her home and remove it. be careful with the hoses, especially the big elbow hose at the AFM to TB, very brittle and note clamp orientation/s

Get Carb Cleaner and spray liberally (inside only) while rattling it until the fluid comes out clear then spritz with some silicon based spray lube, rattle it to work it in, then plug it back up. For extra measure, check the ohms prior to install and maybe check the harness and clean the contacts with contact cleaner.

Wait, have you checked your idle switch?

Go to the engine bay, car off, manually pull the throttle and slowly set it back to rest, you should hear a click of the idle switch. Some have reported the switch being sticky or not working at all.

Your gas pedal area is free of debris or errand carpet pieces not snagging right?

When my buddy's 86 had a high idle issue not hunting, we found one of the vacuum lines from the TB to the Fuel Dampener was off. I would check to make sure both hoses ( the elbow fittings ) to the Fuel Pressure Regulator and Fuel Dampeners are snug. if loose, like too wide where they slip right off with the slightest touch, use zip ties to keep them snug on the component/s.

Sorry, the switch? I haven't checked it. I think the switch is actually what Steve mentioned getting stuck, not the valve.

I'll check it, is it something that needs to be cleaned? or replaced

Draco has the idea...I should have stated to you that you do not have to purchase a high end Fluke. I have a Fluke that has the abilities to do sooo many things that are well past 'my abilities' to do :D

Fluke's are one of the top of the line multimeters on the market. You will own it 'forever'; purchasing a premium brand would be the way to go. Quality tools of any kind, are just plain great to use.
