Forgot this thread...thanks for the reminder :) With a good tune by the crew at Walter Gerber's shop, a set of SSIs, and a Danke sport muffler it took less of a straight to hit 135-140mph fairly easily. I was little busy (don't these people knwo what a Interstate is really for  so I couldn't actually tell you exactly how fast I was going but I had not hit the rev limiter yet.

I think you guys need a 993;)
|
And I bet you have a particular 993 in mind huh Brian?? Better stick with my SC. It'll do the 130 pretty easy and that's plenty for me.

more than a top speed rush i enjoy the feeling when you come into a corner hot, applying brakes you feel the ace end get light. then just as you hit the throttle application point (apex for you track guys) still feeling a little lose (must have this loose feeling even then) , then you summons a bunch throttle and the way a 911 sits down in back, hooks up and propells you into the next turn is the best. sorry about the run on sentence, i was revisiting a drive in my mind from last weekend. i now will go clean my shorts off and have a smoke.

I stick with the factory specs on the motor and gearing and say 165mph. |

I think top speed is 170's, correct me if I am wrong. I will never see though. |
Hey fella's, K911sc.. he's not kidding.. I was there trying to keep up with this guy.. If any of you Bay Area guys enjoy frisky twisties Go out and hang with K911sc.. Man that was a blast... we did about 140 miles for the day 100 miles of those nuttin but curves and sweeps..
Jorge (Targa Dude) |
We had a 996 on the track yesterday in the rain. He wasn't running away in leaps and bounds from anyone in a 911 even the 25 year old ones. I am sure the top end is there but how you get to it through the corners is what makes a 911 fun.
Nice cars and I would love to own a 993 but for the difference in 40 or 50K, a well sorted out SC or old Carrera has to be the best value in fun quota per dollar of all the Porshes available. Now add an extra 100hp or so to that 25 year old car and I suspect it would turn the tables on any plain jain 993 or 99. |
I have taken my car with stock the 3.0, SSI's and a Danske 2 to 1 up to 130 mph with more possible before running out of straight track. That's plenty fast enough for me and I'd hate to get pulled over for it.
|
New shocks and wheel balance and I'm hittin' 140 mph - no problem. The rev's are about 6000 rpm, though.
|
I had my stock 85 up to 130 on a nice empty straight road last summer...and there was a lot left in her.....felt rock solid and wanting more...but thats all I felt like doing at the time...

Many years ago.
79SC
At redline in 5th gear it was still pulling and speed was over 145mph. This was stock, before the SSIs. Looking back, that was not too smart of me. There are two many things outside your control on regular highways; potholes, tire retread, animals, you name it. I'll save speed for the track now. The funny thing is the car still follows the rpm/speed curve so there's no reason to think it couldn't still do it and it's 24 years old. |
I know this is outside of the original year range, but I have had my '88 at redline in 5th which should be about 150 if you do the math (speedo read higher). It was still climbing (slowly), but I ran out of room. 145 once with the top off but the windows up, that's noisy, I thought the back window was going to pop at any minute, but I think with the windows up the wind into the car is much, much less than with them down.

You dont even know how much I appreciate this chart being posted, thank youhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/911scgears1.jpg http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat3.gif http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/beerchug.gif http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...s/boldblue.gif http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/...boldyellow.gif

I pulled 118 mph @ 5200 RPM, but ran out of open freeway to continue.

Just off on a wild tangent here. Anyone know how fast an early car with a 3.2 will go? (I am too scared to find out):D
|
I think this "how fast thing" isn't so important in older 911's. Most of time answer is "fast enough"...especially in 930 which is "too fast for it's own good" in my opinion. It isn't exactly comfortable to dart straight @ 170+ mph in tail-heavy car with very direct steering and lot's of camber/toe-in.
|
Won't a Targa go 156? I read that somewhere? (Just trying to get a thread going that's been sitting over 11 years).
|
I've played with the 130 mark, windows down and top off, it gets a little interesting...on a road in Mexico.
To be honest I wasn't taking note of exact rpm, but the car was pulling hard when I lifted. Having done north of 150 before in other cars, other than rev limiter, I don't see how it couldn't have gotten there or very close. |
