Porsche vs Viper
Well I had to start the post like that but it is not about a race.
I had the opportunity to drive a Viper today. I have to tell you that I would much rather have my car. Don't get me wrong. The Viper is scary fast. It isn't a car for the meek. But I would much rather drive a 911. It feels alot like a vette with the long hood and the reclining position of the seats. The transmission well down the center is so wide that the pedal cluster is actually shoved over to the left so your feet are not even directly in front of you. Even though it is a car they race it drives much more like a muscle car than a sports car. For 85 or 90 grand I would buy a 996 way before a Viper. I do have to say though it was a rush to drive it once anyway

Don't feel bad about feeling that way. I am a certified Viper Technician, have driven plenty of them, and I agree completely!

Youve heard the saying that a Porsche is a street car made for the track? Well a Viper is a track car with a license plate option. I'm a Viper tech also, and have worked on/driven several of them, even on the track. The way the car is built was strictly for the track. The plastic pieces dont fit right, it rattles, heck the early ones didnt even have windows, no a/c, etc. But I'll tell you what,.. the car is brutally fast, the torque is a major rush everytime i drive one. Only Turbos or Cup cars can keep up with them.

I once beat a Viper autocrossing with a (gasp!) 944S2 I used to own.
Now the rest of the story.... 400hp doesn't mean much in the rain! |

Actually Dantilla it wouldn't surprise me if you beat one in the dry. I dont think a tight autocross is probably a great venue for a Viper, not really enough room for it.

OLD SAYING
U heard the old saying, "Race on Sunday go to work on Monday." There wasn't much difference between what you raced and what you drove to work.....
Auto Racing started out so that the car manufacturers could prove how REALIABLE their cars were not how fast....... |
