1987 Cabriolet top

I am in the process of getting the top aligned and found that the left gear does not have gears 360 degrees (see photo). So as I am lining it up, does anyone know the positioning of the gear so that when the top is raised and lowered it will stay engaged with the gears? Thanks!

there is a marker on the other side, cast into the metal. the marker shows the positition of where the arm should be in the fully closed position. so you at least know the limit of the control arm, and can position the gear accordingly
