Powder coat issue on fan strap

Hello everyone,

I had my fan strap powder coated twice, by two different shops, and both times it came back looking pretty bad.
Does the strap material offer some difficulties to the coating or have I just experienced to bad powder coasters?

Any of you had issues like this?

Have you had any luck with just painting it? If so, what did you use?

Thanks for any help.

Michael

Looks like a cadmium plating to me. If you want something that looks real nice pelican sells a Rennline aftermarket strap that's made out of stainless. I have one and love it.

That doesn't looking like PC, unless certain companies are now able to offer what looks like Cadmium? Or did you have it cleared?

The strap is too flexible for powder coating and will probably crack anyway. Buy a new one for best results.

Mine was powdercoated black probably ten years ago, has been taken off and replaced several times, and still looks new. Nothing wrong with PC in this application if done well.

Used parts may not produce a consistent plating finish. Here are new aircraft bolts that have been CAD plated.

Try polishing the base metal to replicate the above finish.

Another option is to coat the part with ceramic paint. It's thin (0.003"), durable and doesn't affect the molecular structure of critical components (e.g. hydrogen embrittlement).

Thanks everyone, good information.
I guess the coating place just assumed I wanted a cadmium plating.

I put it back together to enjoy some driving as the weather has been awesome lately up here in the northeast.
I'll pull it back out in the fall and do something then.

Thanks for your replies.

Michael
