Dual Plug and the MSD Digital 6AL in a 3.2

It has been stated in a few different posts that a pair of (old analog) MSD 6ALs would not trigger off of the single shared signal coming from a Motronic ECU. Andial had a product described as a signal splitter that people used in conjunction with a pair of analog 6ALs. As I understand it this was actually a pair of signal generators triggered from the original signal.

Has anyone tried using the one signal direct from the Motronic to a pair of the new Digtial 6ALs? As an analog circuit I can understand why a certain signal power level might be required while switching to a digital controller may simple 'read' the change in voltage and not need to have any threshold amperage behind it.

As a competitive solution the Electromotive XDI system would cost around $2000 and offers easier tuning, but it also gets rid of the dizzy, which rubs me the wrong way somehow.

Bob

Andial's splitter was used as a "piggyback" to the existing ECU and within that signal splitter are two ignitor modules from a later 964 (I believe) ignition system. With that splitter & its ignitors, you use the twin distributor from a 964 or 993 engine, along with another ignition coil like the original 3.2 Motronic ignition, and there you have your twin ignition and no need for the MSD 6AL units.

The other way guys have created a twin ignition system is by using two MSD 6AL units, two MSD Blaster coils and a custom 12 plug distributor like the Jarvis unit or the JB Racing unit

Scroll down to nearly the bottom of the page to see the distributors. JB Racing - Porsche Engine Components

Sal on these forums has recently delved into this twin plug setup

Andial Splitter, simpler alternative solution.

KTL is right. I've used the JBRacing one with 2 MSDALs and their coils with good effect. The dizzy comes with different ramps to change the rpm advance curve.

I am repurposing that motor now and keeping the same MSD boxes and coils and JBRacing distributor but the plan this time is to lock teh distributor timing down at -10 degrees and use Megasquirt to trigger. Lets see if that works.

I need one of these set ups for a 3.4 - sent you a PM Sal. Great work BTW!

Best,
Anna

Actually, both of the above approaches are of the same complexities. In one case, it's the added Andial
box and in the other case it's Sal's. One recent approach uses just two 964 modules with out any "box"
and a more recent one uses just one added 964 module.
