Aarrgggh! door handle help
I removed my driver's side exterior door handle on my 83 SC to replace a broken trigger. All was fine, until reassembly - when I go to close the door it will not shut. Everything works fine with the door handle off, interior door lock and door pull works fine but when I put the door handle back on something happens that won't allow me to close the door. I believe it is the locking mechanism on the driver's side that won't allow you to lock your keys inside but I fail to see where I messed up here. All I did was pull the exterior handle and replace it exactly as I found it making sure not to move anything out of place. I am beyond frustrated and have resorted to getting in my car Duke boys style which is getting old. What am I doing wrong please?

Does the door bang on the striker?
I have been through this but it's been a while. I remember pulling on the interior door handle to allow it to close but this was years ago. Once it shut all worked fine. I could be dead wrong. |
I have moved the striker but the door will only close with it in one position. I can't figure out why the door will close without the exterior handle on and won't when I reinstall it.

with the handle on and the door open, will the key move the lock?
|
As I recall, yes it will.

Not sure what you mean by door not closing. Do you mean that the latch on the door (two pronged) hits the striker on the body? If so, this would suggest that as you fit the handle you are moving the latch to closed position. The door lock should have antishut mechanism which means that you can't lock the door while it is open but you can lock the door while it is open if you defeat the system by grabbing hold of the two-pronged latch on the door and rotating but the door will not now close as the prongs on the latch will foul against the striker. So, if you have fitted the handle correctly you should not be able to lock the door while it is open. Hope this helps

Deek... I know the "single finger" from the door handle must be positioned between "Y" of the internal door mechanism or things don't work right. Not exactly sure what does not work right so cannot say for sure this is the issue.

Thanks for the input Pelicanites. I needed to adjust the plunger on the external handle - it was never a door issue. Very frustrating but now fixed.

Deeking - Did you replace the trigger with a new aluminum design from EPS or the OEM porsche one? I just broke a trigger and am thinking about changing both out now.
