I did it.
But I did it sneakily: I have retained the old CDI box in place and used the original CDI harness to connect to the distributor, switched power source and coil positive. The MSD 6A box sits reasonably invisibly on the lower firewall and uses one of the mounting screws to double as the ground anchor point. Main power is drawn from the engine compartment fuse box, again routed with stealth in mind. Everything is nice and tidy and very reversible if ever needed. I used the MSD high vibration coil, which is the only obvious external difference. I denuded the coil of its ugly stickers, which leaves a basic looking satin black coil in place. It fits directly into the old mount. The tach can be connected to its original connection on the distributor and works with no trouble WITHOUT A TACH ADAPTOR or anything else. Note, the 6A box does not have the rev limiting capability built in; this may be the reason for success. Jury's open on this one, but in my case it works. And works wonderfully!!!! Starting is easier, throttle response markedly better. It pulls like a train and can be slipped into 4th were previously 3rd would be used. I have gained 500rpm in my idle- a massive ammount, and I will have to reset my MFI as a consequence. No particular hardship there, and maybe more performance can be gained. All in all I am very happy. I have to put some new plugs in and thus get the chance to open the gap out to an MSD friendly figure. More power, peace of mind, better idle, better torque...easy to reconvert....who could complain? NOT ME!! ![]() ------------------ '72 911 TE |

I was anticipating that question! I'll try to get a camera and shoot some pics later on in the week. The Missus won't let me touch her work camera with all this snake oil covering my fingers

And I will join Matt for the photo shoot, so as to show the bodgy install I have done.
I went for the flashy mount. Replaced the CD box (not an original one any way) with the big red pimpy MSD box. Move voltage regulator to back wall. My car (webered T with E cams) also now pulls like a train from low revs and 4th is ok where 5th was. Idles like a champ too. I better tidy up all the wires and clean the engine bay, otherwise I will be severly embarrassed ![]() Cam |
